Marvel Studios has revealed the first in a series of posters for the upcoming animated series What If…? It is already known that the upcoming series will focus on various tales from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and offer a unique take on them. One of the stories involves Peggy Carter and what would happen had she taken the super-soldier serum to become Captain Carter.
Shared on Twitter, the poster introduces Marvel fans to Captain Carter, casting the fan-favorite character in a whole new light. Originally created by Freya Betts, who goes by @freyabettsart on Twitter, the artwork is a clever play on the traditional Captain America poster, with the hero's face being replaced by that of Carter’s. The iconic Captain America shield has also been replaced with another one that features the British flag.

It has been confirmed that Hayley Atwell will be returning to reprise her role as Captain Carter in both seasons of the upcoming series. Atwell first appeared as the character in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger as Steve Rogers’ love interest. She has also provided cameos in other Captain America and Avengers films. She will be one of the main characters in What If…? and is being referred to as the “driving force behind the series."
During a recent virtual press conference, executive producer of the series Brad Winderbaum revealed that as they started planning the second season of What If…?, they realized that “Captain Carter was going to be the character who we would revisit in every season and continue [the] adventure.” The character is being compared to Captain Britain from the comics, who was created by Merlyn and sent to earth to defend the Multiverse from various threats. However, fans already know that the Multiversal version of Captain Carter will get her powers from the same super-soldier serum that gave Captain America his abilities.
Following the creation of the Multiverse in Disney Plus' Loki, the MCU characters could face very different fates than their Infinity Saga counterparts, especially considering their multiple Variants. What If…? will help fans visualize how things would have played out differently if the incidents in the MCU had been slightly altered. The creative team had so many ideas that a second season is already in pre-production before the series has even premiered on Disney Plus.
Of course, with the multiverse expected to play a significant role in Spider-Man: No Way Home and the Doctor Strange sequel, fans are eager to see if the stories in What If…? will have an impact on the next batch of MCU films.
What If…? premieres on Disney Plus on August 11, 2021.
