Professor Layton Developer Level-5 Is Working On A New Game

Level-5, the Japanese studio best known for the Professor Layton series, is working on a “completely new project”, according to a recent job listing. While the studio remains tight-lipped on what this new project is specifically, the recruitment page suggests it's early in development, as numerous important roles still need to be filled.

Among the roles Level-5 is recruiting for, there’s producers, programmers, character designers, and even the all-important game director. The jobs are all Japan-based, but the team is currently working from home, further suggesting this new project is a long way from the public’s eyes.

Taking a peek at the job description gives us a bit more of an idea on what we can expect. The programming role is specifically looking for a candidate with experience in maintaining servers, suggesting the game could be online-focussed. The team is also recruiting for a 3D-map designer, who will be responsible for creating towns and dungeons, as well as “ dynamic objects”. From this, it’s reasonable to guess it could be an open-world title.

On top of this, Level-5 is looking for candidates with experience on a variety of platforms, such as PS4, Wii U, and Nintendo 3DS. It’s possible that in these early stages of development, Level-5 is shooting for a multi-platform launch.

While this confirmation that a completely new series is on the way is big, the listing also appears to suggest another unannounced game is on the way, which may be further in development. “Of course,

we also welcome creators who can participate in the project currently under development”, reads the ad. One guess is that this refers to another Professor Layton game, since the last one was in 2017 and the franchise celebrates its 15th anniversary next year.

Level-5 was formed in 1998, and has since been behind hit franchises such as Professor Layton, Dark Cloud, and Yo-kai Watch. The company has released titles across all platforms, including mobile. Anyone not big on mobile releases can rest easy however, since the listings make a lot of references to prior experience developing for console specifically.
