PS5’s 4K Blu-ray Drive Tests Better Than One Found In Xbox Series X

A new generation of consoles is here and have been on the market for roughly 4-5 months. There isn’t a lot of exclusive content on either system as of now, but each one has their own pros and cons. One aspect that some people may be interested in is the capability of the 4K Blu-ray player in each system. It seems Sony has the edge there.

The folks at HDTVest on YouTube did a comprehensive test between the 4K Blu-ray disc drive in the disc version of the PS5 and the Xbox Series X. They found that the PS5 ultimately produced better results with colors, as the PS5 produced outputs at 12bit YCBCR444 while the Series X outputted 10bit RGB. They also noted that the PS5 performed better with pure 24 FPS 4K Blu-rays using The Fifth Element European release as a example. The Series X couldn’t properly handle the pure 24 FPS discs, resulting in frames being skipped. However, that is not the norm most Blu-ray discs are not pure 24 FPS, but those that are there may see a noticeable difference.

While HDTVTest did give the slight edge to the PS5, they did comment that the casual viewer probably won’t notice a huge difference, and this will mostly be for cinephiles who want the prime experience. Most likely those people will opt for more high-end standalone players, I imagine, but for those who maybe want to have a gaming console and use it as a secondary, seems going with Sony is the better bet for now.
