Red Dead Redemption 2’s Alligators Were Originally Meant To Attack Horses

Red Dead Redemption 2 has one of the most detailed open worlds ever created. Everything from the landscape to the NPCs and even the fauna bring the world to life like very few other games do. Speaking of fauna, it seems that a certain species in the game was originally designed a bit differently.

If you decide to ride North from the city of Saint Denis, you’ll happen upon a swampy area infested with alligators. They’re pretty slow, so they aren't much of a threat, but they’re easy to miss if you’re on your horse. If you get too close to one of them, there’s a chance that your horse will get freaked out and throw you off. But other than that, they’re probably the least dangerous predator in the game.

As pointed out by GameRant, Redditor Glass-Refrigerator12 shared some early concept art from the game by former Rockstar Games artist, Daren Bader. The artwork shows a man and his horse in a swampy area being attacked by a large alligator. What’s interesting is that the alligator seems to be biting into the horse's leg, which is not something that would happen in the final game; your horse would simply bolt, leaving you face-first in the swamp to deal with the reptile.

As we now know, the alligators don’t directly attack your horse. Perhaps the developers realized that losing a well bonded horse to such a random accident would be a bit too punishing. The player would have to find another horse to make their way to their destination. Not just that, they’d have to purchase another horse and start the bonding process all over again.

Nvidia recently announced that Red Dead Redemption 2 and Red Dead Online will support Nvidia DLSS July 13 onwards. This will add a major performance boost while keeping the game’s gorgeous visuals intact.

Red Dead Online’s Blood Money title update will also go live on the same date. The update will have you working on Guido Martelli's behalf as he tasks you with seeking out something called Capitale. Capitale was once used as currency to exact some of the West's "more sensitive business dealings".
