Resident Evil 3’s “Solid” Sales Drove High Quarterly Profits for Capcom

Resident Evil has been a big driving force for Capcom’s sales and profits these last few years, and that much hasn’t changed in the last three months. In their recent quarterly financial briefing, Capcom reported impressive profits during the first quarter (April 2020-June 2020) of the current fiscal year, with net sales being up 32.3% year on year and operating income rising 39.1% year on year.

Resident Evil 3’s remake – which launched earlier this year – was an important factor in that, it seems, with Capcom specifically mention that the game saw “solid sales”. Resident Evil 3 shipped 2 million units worldwide within the first five days of its launch, while over the course of its launch month, it sold an impressive 1.3 million digital copies.

As of June 31, 2020, Resident Evil 3’s sales stand at a total of 2.7 million units worldwide, Capcom have now confirmed. Meanwhile, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne and 2019’s Resident Evil 2 remake also continued to contribute to Capcom’s profits.

Resident Evil 3 is available currently on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In our review of the game’s campaign, we said that it was “a solid enough game, but not nearly as impressive as other recent Resident Evil titles.” Meanwhile, our impressions of the multiplayer side of the package with Resident Evil Resistance were far more mixed, calling it “a bit too rough to be anything more than a minor distraction.” You can read more about both through the links.
