In the very disjointed year of 2020, the ever changing release schedule has let some games go underappreciated or just outright unnoticed. This year’s Sakura Wars is one such title that released to little fanfare from veterans and newcomers to the franchise. Despite Sakura Wars not even making the top 20 sales chart upon release, it seems the franchise isn’t dead just yet.

Yesterday, publisher and developer Sega opened a new teaser website and Twitter account for “Project B.L.A.C.K.” It wasn’t long until fans made the connection to the Sakura Wars franchise and likely a new game to come. The full reveal of Project B.L.A.C.K. is set for September 2.

The obvious giveaway was a trademark for “Sakura Wars B.L.A.C.K.” which Sega filed back in May. Thus, fans were quick to notice that this is likely the realization of that trademark. The second tip-off was a music video that released soon after Twitter account launched. The video features anime girls dancing in Military uniforms to a song composed by Kouhei Tanaka, the Sakura Wars series composer.

While there were many signs that Sakura Wars would continue, there was some doubt based on developer comments. In July, director of the Sakura Wars reboot Tetsuya Ootsubo, said that he and the development team “would love to continue the series” and were pushing for it. This statement was made after the trademark filing so Sakura Wars B.L.A.C.K. was likely in development at that point.

While it’s not as surprising as the reboot reveal, fans of the Sakura Wars series are still happy that the Sega franchise continues. The most recent Sakura Wars reboot was well-received by fans after a long hiatus for the series. It’s unknown if mangaka Tite Kubo will return to design the characters, but fans can only hope he brings back the style.

Sakura Wars is available now on PlayStation 4 and Project B.L.A.C.K. will be revealed on September 2.
