Skyrim: How To Summon The Dremora Butler

Dealing with the denizens of the Oblivion realms isn't typically an enjoyable experience. Dremora, in particular, aren't pretty sights to behold. They're mean, vicious, and not too keen on the idea of helping mortals. Nevertheless, in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, players have an opportunity to employ the aid of a friendly Dremora in their adventures.

The Dremora Butler will, begrudgingly, carry a portion of a player's burden when summoned. It's not a bad way to give one's housecarls a well-deserved break. Summoning the Dremora Butler, however, requires the use of a Black Book. Acquiring the book and the butler's services can be achieved by following these simple steps.

Travel To Solstheim & Begin The Main Quest

Black Books can only be found on Solstheim as part of the Dragonborn DLC. If it's the player's first time traveling to Solstheim, speaking to Gjalund Salt-Sage at the Windhelm Docks is required. As usual, fans will have the option of either paying, persuading, or intimidating the old sailor to book a trip to the island.

Once there, it's a good idea to get cracking on the main questline of the DLC. Following this chain of quests organically will lead the player to the first of seven Black Books. These are the main quests, in order, that compose the Dragonborn DLC:

  • Dragonborn
  • The Temple of Miraak
  • The Fate of the Skaal
  • The Path of Knowledge
  • The Gardener of Men
  • At the Summit of Apocrypha

Complete "The Path Of Knowledge" & "The Gardener Of Men"

In "The Path of Knowledge," players will obtain their first Black Book, titled "Epistolary Acumen." Reading the book as part of "The Gardener of Men" will give players the basic idea of how Black Books work. Any Black Book that is read on the island of Solstheim will instantly transport players to Apocrypha.

Every book possesses three possible rewards, of which only one can be active per book at a given time. The completion of "The Gardener of Men" quest serves as an ideal moment when players should consider collecting the remaining six books.

Travel To Benkongerike

Now that fans know how Black Books work, it's time to collect the Dremora Butler. Specifically, players need to obtain "Black Book: Untold Legends." This particular item is located in Benkongerike, a dungeon located in the north of Solstheim. Head there directly to get the ball rolling.

Speaking To Neloth, An Optional Method

Players are free to travel straight to Benkongerike to collect the book. Alternatively, fans can speak to Neloth at his home in Tel Mithryn. This begins a quest chain titled "Lost Knowledge," whereby players are sent to find the remaining Black Books. The order is random, but Neloth will pay the player for their services once a book has been retrieved.

Finding "Black Book: Untold Legends"

Learning the hidden knowledge contained within "Untold Legends" can be a bit of a process. Follow these steps from beginning to end to claim the final reward:

  • Enter Benkongerike and fight the Rieklings that infest the place
  • Follow the linear path until one reaches the Cyclone Word Wall at the end of the dungeon
  • The puzzle solution to access the Word Wall is, from left to right: Eagle, Whale, Whale, Snake
  • Behind the Word Wall, down a small passage, lies the Black Book. Read it

At this point, players will be transported to Apocrypha, where the real danger begins. Once again, follow these steps to unlock the power of the Black Book:

  • Players will start at Chapter I. Follow the linear, enemy-free path to reach Chapter II
  • Follow the linear path until the passage forks in two directions. Turn left and enter Chapter IV
  • A locked gate occupies the center of the room. On the right-hand side of the room, activate the central Scrye. Do the same for the left-hand side of the room
  • The central gate will now unlock. Activate its Scrye. The path to Chapter V will now open
  • In Chapter V, proceed down the corridor. Turn left when the room starts to rotate. In the next room, turn right when the room starts to rotate

Once done, the Black Book will be sitting on a pedestal. It's also worth mentioning that throughout this process players will need to battle several Seekers and Lurkers, so be prepared for intermittent combat.

The Secret Servant Power

Those wanting to make use of the Dremora Butler need to select the Secret Servant power. When summoned, the Dremora Butler will offer to share some of the player's burdens. He possesses a capped 148 Carry Weight, so the poor fellow can't lug around everything. Still, he certainly comes in handy in a pinch.
