Skyward Sword: Heart Piece Guide

Quick Links

Whether you're playing the original or Skyward Sword HD, you're going to want to beef up Link's max health if you want to make it far through this iteration of the Zelda world. Luckily, there are 24 Heart Pieces to collect around the Sky and the Surface, which will add six total hearts to your health bar. There are also two Medals to collect that will add a heart each (so long as you keep them in your Adventure Pouch).

Add these hearts to the six you start with and the six full Heart Containers you can find after defeating bosses, and Link's max health rounds out to 20 hearts.

Here's a handy chart to see how to max out your health:

Starting hearts 6
Heart Containers dropped by bosses 6
Pieces of Heart 24 (24÷4 = 6 hearts)
Life Medal hearts 2
Total 20

Without further ado, here's where to find all of the Pieces of Heart in Skyward Sword.

Skyloft, the Lumpy Pumpkin, and Around The Sky

There are quite a few Pieces of Heart that you can find around Skyloft and the various islands that populate the Sky (including Pumpkin Landing). All the rewards for the Goddess Cubes you can activate on the Surface will come from Goddess Chests around the Sky, too. Some of these Goddess Chests have Heart Pieces. We've listed them in this section, but the Cubes to activate will be on the Surface.

Piece of Heart #1 – Skyloft

After finding Kukiel, you can start collecting Gratitude Crystals. Once you give ten of them to Batreaux, he'll give you a Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #2 – Skyloft

A Piece of Heart on Skyloft can be obtained rather easily, though you'll have to spend a bit of cash.

Beedle will sell a Heart Piece for 1,600 rupees, but it won't appear until you've purchased several items from him already.

If you return his missing beetle and Bug Cage as part of the sidequest he gives you, he'll give you an item at half-off. However, there are some Medals he sells that are expensive as well (1,000 rupees for the Bug Medal and 800 rupees for the Life Medal). The Heart Piece is the best use of the discount, but it's up to you.

Piece of Heart #3 – Skyloft

Minigame time! In classic Zelda fashion, you can earn a Piece of Heart by successfully winning a minigame.

After helping Fledge with his "I Want to be Strong" sidequest, he'll offer a new minigame. You'll also need the Bow.

This minigame is called "Pumpkin Pull" and consists of Fledge tossing pumpkins in the air while you shoot them, sort of like moving target practice. If you score at least 600 points, Fledge will give you a Piece of Heart.

Tips: Try to hit consecutive targets, as you'll get a bonus for consecutive hits. Each consecutive pumpkin will give a bonus 10 points, up to a total of 50 per pumpkin. If you don't miss any, you only need to hit 15 pumpkins to get 600 points (10 + 20 + 30 + 40 + (50 x 11))

Piece of Heart #4 – Skyloft

After completing the Pirate Stronghold dungeon, you'll find yourself back outside. If you look at the exit, you'll notice a Clawshot target above it. Latch onto it, then turn around and latch onto another one even higher up. Climb up and you'll see a Goddess Cube on this platform. Hit it with a Skyward Strike and it'll activate.

Then, in Skyloft, make your way over to the floating waterfall islands. You can use your Clawshots to latch onto the vines and climb up these islands. The large island — the one with the waterfall — will now be home to a Goddess Chest with a Piece of Heart inside.

Piece of Heart #5 – Skyloft

You'll need the Clawshots for this Heart Piece.

Climb up onto the Knight Academy using the vines on the south wall. Then, grab onto the chimney with your Clawshots. Drop down and you'll find a passage. If you crawl through it, you'll find yourself inside Zelda's room (creepy).

Open up her wardrobe (even creepier) to find a Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #6 – Skyloft

You'll need the Water Dragon's Scale to retrieve this Heart Piece.

In Eldin, when you're making your way through the area with the large sand slide, you'll be able to grab a ride on a gust of wind on the left, which will take you up on top of the cliff. You should be able to see the Goddess Cube on a lower platform, so just drop down to it and activate it with a Skyward Strike.

Back in Skyloft, you'll be able to find the Goddess Chest with the help of the Water Dragon's Scale. Dive into the lake near the building that's partially in the water, and swim underneath it through a tunnel. Resurface inside this shed to find two chests, one of which is the Goddess Chest with a Heart Piece inside.

Piece of Heart #7 – Beedle's Island

Nearby the Temple of Time (just northwest), you can ride a minecart after activating a Timeshift Stone. While it moves, you'll pass by a Goddess Cube. You'll have to hit it with a Skyward Strike quickly as you pass it — but don't worry, you can keep trying.

After you successfully activate this Goddess Cube, you can find the corresponding chest on Beedle's Island. It'll have a Heart Piece inside.

Piece of Heart #8 – Fun Fun Island

Once you get unlock the inside of the Thunderhead, you can visit Fun Fun Island and help its owner, Dodoh, with a task. He's lost his Party Wheel, and you'll have to help him find it. It's located in Lanayru Desert, and you'll need to get Scrapper to help you carry it back up to Dodoh. Once you've done this, you'll be able to play the minigame he offers, which consists of skydiving through some floating rings.

If you manage to float through all of the rings, then land on the multicolored square, you'll receive a Piece of Heart from Dodoh. Make sure you avoid the Dodoh balls! Every time you successfully win this minigame afterward, he'll give you 50 rupees instead.

Piece of Heart #9 – The Sky

Outside of Skyview Temple in the Deep Woods, you'll find a Goddess Cube. Strike it with a Skyward Strike to activate it, and you'll activate the corresponding chest.

Next, when you're back up in the Sky, you can find a tiny island that's basically just a grassy rock, south of Skyloft. On it is the Goddess Chest you unlocked, and it contains a Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #10 – The Sky

You will need the Double Clawshots for this one.

Simply look for the large root where the Goddess Cube is located (over top of the pond). Use your Clawshots to grab the target on the curled part of the root to lift yourself up onto it and activate the Cube with a Skyward Strike.

You'll find the corresponding Goddess Chest on an island near the beam of light that takes you to Lanayru Desert's entrance. You can dive down inside of the volcano-shaped cone, then use your Clawshots to lift yourself up to where the Chest is. Inside is a Piece of Heart. You can also skydive onto the landing, though the Clawshots method is a lot easier.

Piece of Heart #11 – Bug Island

Near the waterfall on the Volcano Summit in Eldin, you'll see an obvious diving platform. If you jump off of it, you can glide down to different landing points. One of them, located sneakily behind one of the taller ones, is home to a Goddess Cube. Land on it, hit the Cube with a Skyward Strike, and it'll activate.

You'll find the corresponding Goddess Chest on Bug Island inside the Thunderhead. You'll need to jump down to the platform from the top of the stone tower that occupies much of the island. You can either climb up it, or dive down to it from your Loftwing and land on top.

On the lower platform is the Goddess Chest you're looking for, and it'll have a Piece of Heart inside, of course.

Piece of Heart #12 – The Lumpy Pumpkin

If you head up to the second floor of the Lumpy Pumpkin, you can spot a Piece of Heart atop the chandelier. Dash-roll into the railing a couple of times and the chandelier will fall, giving you access to the items on top. You'll have to work off your debt to Pumm for breaking his prized decor, which leads to the next Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #13 – The Lumpy Pumpkin

After breaking the chandelier, Pumm will make you work off your debt. You won't be able to finish these tasks until you have the Goddess Harp, though, which you'll get after completing the Lanayru Mining Facility dungeon.

Pumm will give you three tasks:

  1. Deliver some Hot Pumpkin Soup to Eagus, who is the trainer that you work with in the Sparring Hall in Skyloft.

    • You'll need an Empty Bottle for this, and you have to deliver it before it gets cold (within five minutes).
  2. On Pumpkin Landing, you'll need to carry a stack of pumpkins without dropping any.
  3. Finally, in the evening, you need to play a rhythm game with the Goddess Harp, playing along with the audience's movements.

    • Sleep in a bed inside the Lumpy Pumpkin to make it nighttime.

Once you've done all three of these jobs, Pumm will give you a Piece of Heart.

The Sealed Grounds

There is only one Heart Piece to find in the Sealed Grounds. You can get it after defeating the Imprisoned and with the help of the Goddess Harp.

Piece of Heart #14 – The Sealed Grounds

After you've defeated the Imprisoned for the first time, you can find a Goddess Wall near the Sealed Temple by playing your Goddess Harp near the Blessed Butterflies. Gorko, the Goron, will ask you to draw things on the Wall, via a riddle. When you draw something successfully, he'll give you a Piece of Heart.

If you mess up, you can reset the wall by leaving the area, saving your game, quitting it, and reopening it. Return to the area and the Goddess Wall should be reset.

Faron (The Woods and Skyview Temple)

There are three Pieces of Heart that you can find in Faron Woods, as well as some Goddess Cubes that will unlock Heart Pieces in the Sky. See the above Sky section for those!

Piece of Heart #15 – Faron Woods

This one is very straightforward. During the part of the game's story when you're looking for the missing Kikwis, head to the Great Tree. Look for the pond at the base of it, and nearby, you can start climbing up the tree until you find a tightrope. Make your way across it and grab the Piece of Heart on the platform here.

Piece of Heart #16 – Faron Woods

After you get your hands on some Bombs, head back to Faron Woods. In the southwest corner, there's a cracked wall. Simply bomb it open, and there'll be a Piece of Heart waiting for you.

Piece of Heart #17 – Skyview Temple

Once you've found the Hooked Beetle, you can grab this Heart Piece. Make your way to the large room where you fought the Stalfos.

Fire your Beetle and navigate it upward toward the ceiling. You'll find a diamond switch on top of the dome, so smack it with the Beetle, opening the cage and granting you access to the Heart Piece.

Eldin (The Volcano, the Fire Sanctuary, and the Volcano Summit)

Thee Heart Pieces are located in Eldin Province. A few Goddess Cubes are found here, as well, some of which unlock Heart Pieces in the Sky (listed in the above "the Sky" section).

Piece of Heart #18 – Eldin Volcano

Near the beginning of your time in the Eldin region, you'll find a strange skeletal bridge in the lava. If you take a right before crossing this bridge, you can make your way up some platforms to the upper portions of the cliff, where you'll find a Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #19 – Fire Sanctuary

Right before you enter the boss chamber of the Fire Sanctuary, you can find a spot where you can dig underground with the Mogma Mitts.

Inside, you'll have to hit a switch to activate a gate. But, you'll also find a Mogma who will flee from you. If you manage to catch him, he'll give you a Piece of Heart after recognizing your Mogma Mitts.

Piece of Heart #20 – Volcano Summit

Along the way to the Fire Sanctuary, you'll have to contend with some walls of fire. Where the second one was, you'll find a spot where you can see three soft bits of dirt. There'll be a Gossip Stone/some butterflies here as well.

If you dig into the middle spot, you'll enter an underground tunnel. Make your way through it, and there'll be a Piece of Heart waiting for you on the other side.

Lanayru (The Desert, Sand Sea, Gorge, and the Sandship)

Like with Faron and Eldin before it, Lanayru contains a few Heart Pieces but also some Goddess Cubes that will unlock Heart Pieces in the Sky. You can use the above section on the Sky to find those.

Piece of Heart #21 – Lanayru Desert

In the far northeast corner of the Lanayru Desert map, you can find a bombable wall. Do exactly that, and follow the corridor that is created. There'll be some Chuchus along here to fight, and eventually a chest. Inside the chest is — you guessed it — a Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #22 – The Sandship

After defeating Scervo, you'll obtain the Wooden Bow. You can use it to hit the Timeshift Stone on top of the central mast. With the time changed, you can climb that same mast and navigate over the various ziplines and ropes toward the stern (back of the ship). Then, use the Clawshots to make your way down to a chest with a Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #23 – Lanayru Sand Sea

Once you've completed the Sandship dungeon, you'll unlock the Rickety Coaster minigame. It costs 20 rupees to play, so make sure you have enough for a few tries.

Choose the Expert course (Heart-Stopping), and if you complete it in 65 seconds or less, you'll earn a Piece of Heart.

Piece of Heart #24 – Lanayru Gorge

After you grow and give the Life Tree Fruit to Lanayru and unlock his portion of the Song of the Hero, you can visit Lanayru Gorge for a new minigame, of sorts. In this "Thunder Dragon's Lightning Round," you can battle bosses you've defeated before.

If you win four battles in a row, you will win a Piece of Heart. However, do note that you have to quit at that point to get it — if you keep going, you'll earn higher prizes, and they don't stack. You get the one for the round you finished last.

Life Medals & Heart Containers

Heart Pieces aren't the only way to increase your max health. There are two Medals in the game that will also increase your total health by one heart each. Additionally, in accordance with Zelda tradition, there are six heart containers dropped by bosses after you defeat them.

In order to achieve the full 20 hearts, you'll need to have both Life Medals equipped. Otherwise, the max you'll have is only 18.

Boss Fight Heart Containers

The following bosses will drop a Heart Container upon defeat, increasing your maximum health by an entire heart:

  1. Ghirahim (Skyview Temple fight)
  2. Scaldera
  3. Moldarach
  4. Koloktos
  5. Tentalus
  6. Ghirahim (Fire Sanctuary Fight)

Life Medal #1

The first of two Life Medals is simply purchased from Beedle. He'll sell it for 800 rupees. However, you can get that slashed down to 400 rupees by completing his missing beetle sidequest. But, it's better to use that one-time discount for something more expensive, like the Bug Medal (1,000 rupees -> 500 rupees) or the Piece of Heart (1,600 rupees -> 800 rupees).

Life Medal #2

The second of the two Life Medals can be obtained by locating a Goddess Cube.

This one is located south of the Lanayru Mining Facility. You'll need to use the Clawshots to lift yourself up onto the platforms here, just south of the dungeon. You should be able to see the Cube with relative ease, then make your way over to it and activate it with a Skyward Strike.

The corresponding Chest is on an island just northwest of Fun Fun Island. Land on this island and climb down some vines to reach a lower part of the island. Here, you'll find the Goddess Chest that contains the second Life Medal.
