Sony Plans to “Bolster” its First Party With “Selective” Acquisitions in the Future

PlayStation Studios

Sony’s first party consistently produces some of the best games in the industry every year, and the group of studios has been improving with age. We’ve never seen Sony’s first party developers in as fine form as they have been during the PS4 era, and so far, they look set to continue in that direction with the PS5.

But that doesn’t mean there’s no room for growth and improvement (especially with Microsoft suddenly becoming such a formidable presence as far as their first party portfolio is concerned). Sony have previously said on a few occasions that they’re going to keep looking into acquiring more studios in the coming future. Recently, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan suggested the same once more.

Speaking to Reuters, Ryan said that Sony will look to improve its first party output even further with more mergers and acquisitions in the future (their last acquisition was Insomniac Games last year). However, he also adds that Sony will be “selective” with its acquisitions based on how viable they are.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the console market, Microsoft seem to be showing no signs of stopping the spending spree they’ve been on over the last couple of years, with Xbox boss Phil Spencer recently saying that they will continue to acquire more developers in order to be able to keep producing more content for Game Pass. Read more on that through here.
