Splitgate is the wild blend of Halo and Portal that continues to shoot up the Steam charts. Yesterday, the ambitious FPS set a concurrent player record of 67,724 — more than double what it was at last month.
Since going into open beta, Splitgate has risen in popularity at a staggering pace. Back in July, developer 1047 Games took the game offline because servers could not keep up with the flood of players getting in on the portal combat. The console versions even missed the July 27 release date due to 1047 Games wanting to focus on server stability for the time being. It seems this one is a bit successful, eh?

The team at 1047 Games is hard at work to iron out the kinks, though. Thanks to $10 Million in funding from a venture capital firm, the development team is expanding its staff, increasing server capacity, and extending the current beta for a couple more weeks. Given how rough launch periods for multiplayer games are, it's good to see 1047 Games is taking the demand seriously.
What's particularly noteworthy about Splitgate's success is it's been on early access for quite a while now. Originally coming out in May 2019, its explosion in popularity is a recent thing. In late July, 1047 Games discovered a database issue where the game can only handle 65,536 players, which they only found because that many people were playing. The developer was quick to share these findings with the community and got to work on a new queue system to alleviate load balancing issues on the servers, which they fixed because, well, Splitgate's new peak is about 2000 over that original cap.
If you'd like to try Splitgate out, it's available for free on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. There's no word on when the final version will come to consoles, but given how dedicated 1047 Games are, it's not likely to be a long wait.
