Recently, we had a mini-rant over the way publishers eek out platform announcements and we specifically highlighted the fact that Square Enix has announced Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster for Steam and mobile platforms only. Now, it seems inconceivable that this collection of classic RPG remasters (all of which debuted on Nintendo consoles, remember) wouldn't come to console platforms, but as yet there have been no announcements.
In a recently published Q&A looking at various game details on Square Enix's website (as pointed out by Nibellion on Twitter), the publisher has addressed its choice of platforms and said that console versions would depend on demand or "requests".
Here's how the ever-reliable, not-at-all-wonky Google Translate interprets the second question in the Q&A:
Why did you choose Steam® and your smartphone?
Currently, Steam® smartphones are being distributed from "I" to "VI", but there are works that have been on the market for more than 10 years, and maintenance is difficult. The evolution of smartphones is amazing. So, first of all, I wanted to remaster with the same smartphone and Steam® so that everyone in the world could play for a long time. If there are many requests, I will do my best so that I can play in more various environments! support me!
Whether you're a FF fan or looking for a convenient way to try out the first half-dozen entries in a classic RPG series, this 'wait-and-see' approach is irritating to say the least. It's easier to understand when small publishers and indie developers are forced to recoup development costs on a single platform before branching out elsewhere, but Squeenix is hardly a mom 'n' pop shop, is it?
