Available later in the game, the movie theater replaces the JojaMart store. Here, you will be able to invite villagers to watch movies with you. First, let's take a look at how to unlock the movie theater.

How To Unlock The Movie Theater

To unlock the movie theater, you will need to complete the Community Center. After the Community Center is complete, JojaMart will move from their building, leaving it abandoned.

When you enter the abandoned building, you will see a little plaque for the Missing Bundle. This is the final bundle in the game. Check out our complete guide on finishing the Missing Bundle.

Once the Missing Bundle is complete, Junimo's will renovate the abandoned building into a movie theater!

If you chose to follow the JojaMart storyline and convert the Community Center into their warehouse, you can still get the movie theater. A payment of 500,000g will turn the building into a movie theater.

Purchasing A Ticket

Once the theater is unlocked, you can begin seeing movies!

To enter the movie theater, you will need a ticket beforehand. Tickets can be purchased at the front of the theater, at the window on the right side. You can see the window circled above.

One ticket will cost you 1,000g. You can use this ticket for yourself, but you can also invite villagers to attend with you. If you plan on going with a villager, don't forget to buy two tickets; one for each of you.

After you purchase a ticket, give it to the villager you want to see the movie with. Next, just enter the movie theater on the day you gave it to them. If you wait a day, then the villager will forget and not attend the movie. You can purchase more tickets for future use, but don't give them to a villager unless you plan on going that day.

Each villager has different movie preferences, so let's go over every movie the theater has to offer.

Movies Available

There are eight different movies that play at the theater. These movies play over a two-year cycle and unlock at different times. This means that as time goes on, you will be able to see different movies.

Outside of the movie theater, there will be two different posters. The left poster is for the movie currently playing, and the right poster is for the movie that will play the following week.

Villagers can either love, like, or dislike a movie. When you invite a villager to see a movie they love, you will earn 200 friendship points. If they like the movie, you will earn 100 friendship points instead. If you take them to a movie they dislike, their friendship won't be affected.

Below, you can check out all 8 movies and when they unlock. Additionally, you will see which villagers prefer each movie.

Movie Unlocked Villagers Who Love This Movie

  • Journey of the Prairie King
  • Wumbus
Clint likes all movies except:

  • The Zuzu City Express
Kent likes all movies except:

  • Mysterium

Krobus only likes Mysterium
Willy likes all movies

Additionally, random villagers will have a chance to be in the audience. If the villager is Pam, then Penny will love the movie, regardless of what it is. The random villager in the audience will not be affected by the movie playing, so you will not gain any friendship points from their presence.

Concessions Available

While at the theater, you will also have the opportunity to buy different concessions.

Like movies, the villagers will have preferences for their movie snacks. A loved snack will earn you 50 friendship points, and a liked snack will earn you 25 friendship points. Disliked snakes will not affect friendship.

Below, you can find a complete list of all the snacks, as well as villager preferences. Out of the 24 snacks, 5 will be selected at random for you to purchase.

How To Play The Crane Game

Lastly, we have the crane game. When you walk into the movie theater, you will see the crane game in the upper left corner. This game can be played before movies. There is a 25% chance that a person will be standing in front of the machine, and you won't be able to play it. Additionally, you can't play the crane game after a movie has ended.

Above, you can see the crane game in action. It looks a bit confusing at first, so let's take a look at how to play.

The crane game costs 500g and you will have three chances to win a prize. Each attempt will last 15 seconds, starting from when your first move the crane.

First, you will move the crane horizontally. After you move horizontally, you will move the crane vertically. The crane will then drop and attempt to grab a prize. The prizes will be on conveyor belts, but you can find rare prizes hidden in the decorative bushes. These will reveal themselves if you drop another prize on top.

Like crane games in real life, this crane has a chance to drop the item while moving it to the collection bin.

Below, you can see every price that the crane game offers. Each season, there will be a new selection of prizes. The prizes will stay the same each year, so if you miss a seasonal prize, you can try again the following year.

Not all of these prizes will be available at the same time. Each time you play a game, the prizes will be randomized. If you play two times in one visit, the prizes will be different.

Tips For Visiting The Movie Theater

Taking a villager to the movie theater works a little differently than gift-giving. You can give a villager a gift two times a week, resetting every Sunday. This means that you can give gifts on Friday and Saturday, and then again on Sunday.

With movies, there is a 'cooldown' period. If you invite a villager to a movie, they will not want to go again for seven days. Try to alternate who you invite to movies.

When watching movies, don't forget to enjoy them! Each movie has a story, and we have even ranked all the movies for you.

Overall, the movie theater is a great place to get to know your villagers. It is unlocked later in the game, so you might already have strong friendships with the villagers of Pelican Town, but don't forget to bring Krobus, the Dwarf, and Leo from Ginger Island!
