PlayStation fans have been hungry for a major Sony event since this summer. While PlayStation has held smaller showcases for Horizon Forbidden West and indie games, it's held back on big E3-sized reveal events. As such, fans have held firm to the belief that a big PlayStation event would arrive sooner or later. Yet June, July, and now August are slipping by. Imagine how those PlayStation fans woke up to see "State of Play" trending on Twitter, only to have their hopes dashed by Russell Crowe.
Russell Crowe is, of course, an internationally famous actor known for films including Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind. He's even the voice of Superman's father Jor-El in Zack Snyder's modern DC Comics films. He also stars in a 2009 crime drama named State of Play. So when Russell Crowe took to Twitter Wednesday evening to ask his followers what their favorite Russell Crowe films were, he helped plant the seeds for PlayStation fan frustration.

While Russell Crowe's performance in State of Play is perfectly tolerable and the film itself, despite average reviews, an enjoyable diversion, it's hardly one of Russell Crowe's best. It co-stars Ben Affleck and has a rough second act, to start, but also Russell Crowe has many other incredible performances. So when it's said that State of Play went trending, it should be clear that Crowe helped pour fuel on an already-building anticipation among PlayStation fans on Twitter.
All it took was some initial State of Play mentions from some of Russell Crowe's more eccentric followers for PlayStation fans to start seeing the term increasingly mentioned. As video game fans are wont to do, many took it to mean that PlayStation could be announcing a new State of Play games showcase soon. Worse, many leapt to the idea that a State of Play could even air today. That's unfortunately not the case.
At the time of those article's publication, Sony has not announced an upcoming PlayStation State of Play event. That's not to say that one won't be coming sooner or later, but for the time being Sony is still playing coy. State of Play going viral has nothing to do with an actual event, though Sony likely very much appreciates the attention.
As for whether Sony will have a PlayStation State of Play event in the relatively near future, that's a very interesting question. A rumor spread this past week that Sony could announce a State of Play for August 19 that would feature Horizon Forbidden West (and its delay), Kena: Bridge of Spirits, Gran Turismo 7, and a new announcement. If that rumor's true, perhaps some PlayStation State of Play news could be arriving soon, after all.
