Steam And PSN Are Both Down

Steam and PlayStation Network services like the PlayStation store are down today after an apparent network outage. So far, there's no explanation for the outage, but users are unable to access Steam to purchase or download new games. The same can be said for the PlayStation network.

User reports on the website Down Detector have spiked in the past hour reporting problems with accessing the PlayStation Network and Steam. Neither Sony nor Valve has provided any explanation for the outage.

Certain Steam services are still available, however. Friends lists and game libraries can still be accessed, and games already present in libraries can still be downloaded. It seems the outage specifically affects the Steam store, preventing users from purchasing new games.

There are also reports of Fortnite being caught up in whatever is affecting these game services, according to the Fortnite Status Twitter account. The Epic Games Store has also been struck by the outage. Social media services such as Twitter, Facebook, and TikTok are unaffected.

According to Twitter reports, the source of the outage seems to be Akamai, one of the biggest ISP networks in the world. "We are aware of an emerging issue with the Edge DNS service," the company wrote on its website. "We are actively investigating the issue."

Akamai has promised to provide updates every 30 minutes on its Twitter account.

It's not just the games industry that has been affected. According to The Verge, websites and services around the world are down from banking and financial sites to travel sites like Delta and Southwest Airlines.

Oracle Cloud Infrastructure is also investigating an issue that might be " impacting access to many internet resources, including Oracle cloud properties." We're not sure yet if Oracle might be partially to blame.
