Street Fighter: Duel Coming To Mobile Platforms Worldwide

A mobile Street Fighter game is coming to Western audiences, according to Capcom. The Japanese publisher made the announcement last weekend during the Capcom Pro-Tour, the biggest Street Fighter tournament of them all.

We first got to see Street Fighter: Duel last summer. Gameplay is less that of a traditional fighter and more like what you get in The King of Fighters All-Star combined with a healthy dose of gacha mechanics. You unlock Street Fighter: Duel's roster via card collecting, with each character's rarity rated from B to S-rank.

There are 98 characters in Duel so far with most of them taken from throughout Street Fighter's grand history. A lot of them are different versions of classic names like Ryu and Chun-Li, but there are also a few completely new characters made just for the Chinese market such as Lu Bu and Jay Chow, a famous Taiwanese singer.

Duel features a story mode, various PvP game modes, training mode, and an extensive character skill tree where you spend lots of in-game resources that you acquire through gameplay or through spending money.

Street Fighter: Duel was first released in China last November thanks to the diligent work of Tencent studio Topjoy, and it's apparently racked up enough of a following to warrant a worldwide release. Capcpom didn't provide any details on specific localizations or when Street Fighter: Duel will arrive in specific countries. Stay tuned for more, I guess.

If you're not really into waiting for a classic franchise to be remade into a mobile game, you could always try the Contra Returns beta that just got started. This time Konami is the publisher that teamed up with Tencent to create a mobile game, but at least Contra Returns brings the franchise back to its shooter roots. Expect classic levels from the original Contra to be remade for this mobile shooter along with 45 characters from throughout Contra's 24-year history.
