Hotel Barcelona is about as strange an idea as you'd expect from the creators of No More Heroes and Deadly Premonition, and talking about can be just as strange. It was first announced back in 2019 during the IGN Japan stream, but it wasn't with a trailer or proclamations. It was more like Suda51 and Swery65 spitballing ideas that seemed to coalesce into a general consensus that they definitely needed to collaborate on a horror game, and that horror game would be called Hotel Barcelona.
The only thing that seemed concrete was the game's title. Ideas included exploring a titular Hotel Barcelona where every room is a doorway to another dimension or timeline on the hunt for a great evil with some murder mystery elements.

We didn't hear about Hotel Barcelona again until January of 2020 when Suda51 tweeted a "Hotel Barcelona 2021" message in response to a tweet from Devolver. Swery65 and Suda51 both seem to have a thing for Devolver and have hinted at pitching their game to the indie publisher once they have something a little more concrete.
Then COVID struck and we haven't heard anything about Hotel Barcelona since then. Until now, that is.
Suda51 recently did a Reddit AMA where a fan asked how things are going with Hotel Barcelona. "I contact SWERY65 at least once every 2 to 3 months, even during COVID, about how to make Hotel Barcelona happen," Suda51 replied. "It really depends on the timing, since it gets heavily influenced on the work I'm doing at that period."
Swery65 hasn't made much noise since the release of Deadly Premonition 2 last year, but Suda51 is in the home stretch of getting No More Heroes 3 out by August.
