Super Metroid: Maridia Walkthrough

Quick Links

One of the most challenging areas in Super Metroid has Samus explore a biome almost completely submerged in water. What makes it even more challenging is the labyrinthine layout of the area, which requires that you enter from a specific point on the map. This guide will show you how to navigate through Maridia and how to get the three major upgrades found within one of the major areas of arguably the best game in the franchise.

How To Enter Maridia

Your journey through Maridia begins in the glass tube that connects Brinstar to Kraid's Lair. If you ever wondered how you were supposed to access this watery area behind the glass tube, the answer is simple: Power Bomb the glass into oblivion. The glass will crack and shatter, giving you free rein in this aquatic biome.

Maridia Walkthrough – How To Get The Space Jump

Now that you are free to explore Maridia, make your way up and through the ceiling door into a tall room. Jump all the way to the top and enter the door on the right.

Equip the Grappling Beam, and swing across this ceiling all the way to the other side to another door. It will be tricky to do and may take several attempts, but several balloon-shaped enemies allow you to grapple back up to the top of the room without restarting from the upper left.

Enter the door and instead of going up the implied path above you, shoot the center of the floor until it crumbles, giving you access to a secret path.

Enter the Super Missile Door at the bottom of the room, then drop a Power Bomb as you enter the next room. Drop down and shoot the Red Missile Door, then enter it to find a Save Room.

Exit the Save Room and start sprinting to the right. Your destination is a narrow gap in the ceiling just before you hit the wall on the right side of the room.

While Speed Boosting, crouch down as soon as you get just beneath the gap, then quickly jump while holding the D-pad up to launch Samus vertically upward at high speed (this is called a Shinespark).

At the top of this room is a Missile Expansion Tank. Collect it and proceed to the right. As you approach the Super Missile Expansion Tank, jump over the section of the floor with the two columns beneath it, because they are breakaway floor panels. Collect the Super Missile Expansion Tank and drop through the floor into the room below.

Make your way back all the way to the top left of the large room, using the Grappling Beam to reach the ceiling door in the corner (If you are proficient at Walljumping, this is significantly easier). Enter the ceiling door to find a room with Metroid wannabes called Mochtroids.

Shoot the wall to the right, dispatching the Mochtroid in the process, then drop to the floor. Sprint to the right and Speed Boost to the other side of the room. The door will lock in the next room, and you will be forced to fight Botwoon in a miniboss encounter. Its only weak point is its head, and it is only susceptible to missiles, so keep plugging away at it until it dies.

Enter the next room and shoot the first few jumping enemies. Backtrack to the entrance of the room, then start sprinting right again, Speed Boosting through enemies and false walls along the way.

In the next room, equip your Grappling Beam again and maneuver your way to the right side of this long room. Use the upper door for access to a Save Room and Ammo Recharge Station.

Enter the lower Super Missile Door and grapple across to the wall on the right side of the room, then shoot the horizontal pipe in the wall to reveal a Missile Expansion Tank. Collect it then return to the entrance of the room.

The spikes on the floor here are fake, so drop through the floor and you'll find a room with a Boss Door (the one with the gross eyeball on it). Shoot the Boss Door with a few missiles and open it up. Getting the Space Jump will require that you defeat it's guardian first, so get ready for a fight when you enter.

Maridia Walkthrough – Draygon Boss Fight Guide

This boss fight is laughably easy once you know the trick to it. The first thing you should when you enter the room is to shoot the domes on either side of the room with missiles or super missiles.

Once you've done that, just shoot Draygon's projectiles with your beams, and wait until it picks you up and swings you around wildly.

Make sure you have your Grappling beam equipped, then get ready to grapple onto one of the broken domes once you get close enough.

Your health will appear to drop rapidly, but don't worry because it will only deplete 50 energy before killing Draygon faster than the upcoming E.M.M.I. robots in Metroid Dread do when they capture Samus. After it dies, enter the next room and collect the Space Jump upgrade.

Maridia Walkthrough – Where To Find The Plasma Beam Upgrade

Use your fancy new toy to jump back up to the door in the top right of Draygon's room. Now it's time for something that Metroidvania's do best, backtracking.

Proceed through the door and up the room back to the Save Room. Space Jump all the way to the left side of the room and enter the narrow vertical room. Drop down and to the left to enter the newly flashing door.

Travel through the long room to the far left side, using your Space Jump to reach high areas. Proceed through the next room and enter the sand room with small enemies coming up from the quicksand. You can shoot these to replenish lost energy and missiles as needed.

In the next sand room, run left then jump up the sloped wall to the right. Keep Space Jumping up, going past the first door on your right, until you reach the top right corner of the room with a flashing door. Jump up through the next room, dispatching enemies as you go, and enter the door at the top.

The next room is filled with Space Pirates that cannot be hurt by your current weaponry, so avoid them at all costs.

Quickly drop down to the lower right corner of the room and pick up the Plasma Beam from the Chozo Statue. It is important to know that the Plasma Beam and Spazer Beam cannot be equipped together, but since the Plasma Beam increases your damage output significantly and is capable of passing through enemies, it is currently the better choice.

Maridia Walkthrough – Where To Find The Spring Ball Upgrade

Now that you have the Plasma Beam, you can kill the Space Pirates in the room quite easily. Doing so unlocks the door to the room and allows you to exit.

Head back down through the door on your left and Space Jump up and around the overhang above you. Make your way to the left side of the room to a Super Missile Door on the floor of a hallway. Drop through this door and it will take you down a tube to the lower part of Maridia. Drop down and bomb the floor, then shoot the door on your right.

Give yourself a running start, then space jump across the room, avoiding the enemies along the way to the door on the far right of the room.

In the next room, latch onto the fragile grapple point in the middle of the room. Once it breaks, Space Jump up through the gap to the top of the room. Drop down and enter the door to the right then drop a Power Bomb as soon as you enter the room.

The mechanical drone in this room will slowly destroy the sand wall in front of you, so be careful not to shoot at it until it finishes the job. Enter the door on the right and drop down the hole in the floor. At the split path, take a left and drop down to find a Chozo Statue with the Spring Ball upgrade.

After acquiring the Spring Ball, you now have access to just about all of Maridia. Use the upgrades to find more Expansion Tanks throughout the area.
