Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania Shows Off New Gyro Controls For Switch

If you’re a fan of gyro controls, it looks like you might want to try out Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania this October. A recent Tweet by producer Masao Shirosaki has given fans a first look at the game’s optional controls for the Switch, and they appear to be quite smooth.

Shirosaki’s tweet is only the latest in a series highlighting some of the new features that have been added to Banana Mania. For starters, a new photo mode will allow players to take photos from various angles, providing the opportunity to capture the monkeys’ classic facial expressions in different frames. In addition, there will be DLC offering the option to switch to the game’s original soundtrack, which is a big draw for fans. But perhaps the most impactful addition to Banana Mania is a series of optional help functions that will make the game more accessible to a wider audience. Players will be able to double the time limit, add a display guiding them to the goal, and even slow down time in order to navigate the trickier parts of a course.

The new clip shows the gyro controls in action on the Nintendo Switch, and from what it looks like, the motion of the controller is well synched with the movement of the character on the screen. Given that players are controlling a ball, the experience seems not unlike driving a car—at least, that is if that car were operating on a floating racecourse in the sky. If you’re not interested in trying out the fancy gyro controls, you’ll still have the option to use good ol’ fashioned buttons and analog sticks to pilot your primate.

Although gyro controls have been met with mixed reviews depending on the game and console, in the case of Monkey Ball, they could really up the ante when it comes to the overall gameplay experience. Navigating some of Monkey Ball’s stages is already difficult enough, with impossibly narrow platforms, tight corners, and steep climbs standing between you and the goal. Add in gyro controls, and suddenly you’re facing a nearly insurmountable task. For those who have already mastered the joystick, however, such a challenge could add a new layer of intrigue to the upcoming remaster.
