Few superheroes have seen as much success over the last few years as Spider-Man. The friendly neighborhood webhead has been enchanting fans across the globe for decades, but the last few years have really shown that Spider-Man is firing on all cylinders. From his long-awaited introduction into the MCU to 2018's visually stunning and narratively fresh Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Marvel's moneymaking mainstay has never been more successful.
To add to that success, Spider-Man had a big break into the video game scene with Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man a few years ago. The game managed to deliver on nearly every element of Spider-Man's character, including creative combat and an emotionally rich story. While many fans are waiting for a sequel, the original game opened the door for a slew of different Spider-Man video games that could ride this current wave of success. Out of those many opportunities, there's an excellent case to be made for a game that doesn't even follow Peter Parker, but instead goes into the future with Spider-Man 2099.

While it may have been a risky idea to make a game dedicated to a character such as Spider-Man 2099 a few years ago, the concept of Marvel's Spider-Verse has rapidly become more well-known over the last couple of years. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse even introduced the character to film audiences with a brief end credit scene. Out of the many Spider-Men that make up Marvel's multiverse, Spider-Man 2099 is arguably one of the more well-known. His comic origins reach as far back as the 90s, so he has had almost thirty years to build up a strong enough following for a solo game.
Although Spider-Man 2099 hasn't been given as many stories as the Spider-Man most fans know and love, the world that Spider-Man 2099 inhabits would provide a plethora of unique storytelling possibilities. Spider-Man 2099, otherwise known as Miguel O'Hara, lives in a New York that is very different from Peter Parker's. Now known as Neuva York, this future is marked by incredible technological achievement and corporate greed. Characters like Venom and Green Goblin are given completely new origins, making Spider-Man 2099's story ripe for a comic adaptation that video game fans haven't seen before.
From a gameplay perspective, a Spider-Man 2099 game would have a suite of possible features at its disposal. The futuristic nature of this Spider-Man opens up a lot of opportunities for sleek gadgets for combat and traversal. O'Hara has a number of abilities at his disposal that Peter Parker does not, including sharp talons attached to his arms, and a sort of web-like glider on his back that makes traveling through Nueva York easier. Implementing these abilities, especially Spider-Man 2099's glider, could make for some exciting gameplay that could even rival Marvel's Spider-Man.
At this point it might be a stretch to think that the rumored Marvel's Spider-Man 2 could be introducing multiverses in any capacity, but the prospect of a Spider-Man 2099 game is exciting nonetheless. Marvel certainly seems to be ramping up its willingness to experiment with the multiverse, considering in recent moves with the MCU and rumors surrounding Spider-Man: No Way Home. It may be awhile until Spider-Man fans get a game that truly deals with the far-reaching corners of the Spider-Verse, but it could become more possible based on how Marvel as a whole succeeds moving forward.
