First Look at Blazing Strike—A Street Fighter and SNK-Inspired 2D Fighter

Back in May, Aksys Games announced Blazing Strike, a 2D fighter developed by RareBreed Makes Games and inspired by some of the biggest franchises of the genre, including Street Fighter and SNK. Mark Chung, founder of RareBreed Makes Games, said that the dev’s goal is “to create an homage to the classic pixel art-based 2D fighters, but with updated game mechanics that not only will bring nostalgia to 90s arcade kids but will offer something new and entertaining to all gamers, regardless of whether they have played fighting games before.”

Three months after the game’s announcement, Aksys Games has finally released its first trailer of Blazing Strike.

Set to a very Street Fighter III-sounding track, the 2D pixel art looks beautiful, the animations look fluid, and the concept art is very well done. A number of characters are introduced in this trailer (while some aren’t officially introduced but we get quick peeks at):

  • Lei Long: The Last Shaolin Monk
  • Alexander: The Wrestling Legend
  • Ryohei: The One-Eyed Assassin
  • Mochizuki: The Ghost Ninja
  • Hana: The Ruthless Oyabun

Blazing Strike will feature a four-button system with six normal attacks: light, medium, and heavy punches and kicks, and a block, guard, and parry for defense. Players can execute fast attacks and movements via the Rush Trigger, but it drains the Rush Meter, which will eventually put fighters into a temporarily groggy state. Game modes will include Story, Arcade, and VS, and training, sparring, and online matches will happen via Persona AI.

Blazing Strike will release on Nintendo Switch in 2022.
