Audiences may know him best for his work directing Fast & Furious films, but Justin Lin has worked on a lot of big name projects, including Star Trek Beyond, True Detective, and Community. Given that kind of track record, it may not come as a surprise that the Taiwanese-American director just landed a multi-year film and television deal with Universal Pictures and Universal Studio.
The exact details of the deal have yet to be announced, but it is reportedly very lucrative, offering Lin and his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner a wide-ranging deal, beginning with F9, and following up with support for television projects through NBC and including their streaming service Peacock. Lin’s company has been working on films for a long time, including Lin’s debut Better Luck Tomorrow which premiered at Sundance Film Festival.

Lin and Universal have been partnered for many projects since he began working on Fast & Furious. Lin spoke of the company fondly while discussing the new deal: “Universal gave me my shot when they offered me the Fast franchise a decade and a half ago. Over the course of these years together, we’ve become a family and I’m thrilled to be coming home. While our relationship started with Fast, we have a lot more stories we want to share with audiences around the world. We… know that together we’ll continue to put forward the compelling, high caliber storytelling our audiences want.”
Universal pictures also seems to have great faith in the deal, expressing gratitude towards Lin and excitement for their upcoming projects. President Peter Cramer said of Lin that “He’s raised the bar again with his incredible work on the upcoming F9, and we are thrilled to welcome him and his Perfect Storm team back to Universal. We know that Perfect Storm will be one of our key suppliers of high-quality, event films for global audiences in the years to come.” This is great news for fans of Lin’s work, as well as Lin himself. Hopefully Justin Lin will continue to bring his signature directing style to even more projects, focusing on the character driven stories that built his stellar reputation as a director.
