Mass Effect’s Next Entry May Run on the Unreal Engine 5
Mass Effect’s next game may run on Epic’s Unreal Engine 5. BioWare Producer Brenon Holmes shared a job listing for an Associate Technical Director that should have experience dealing with both Unreal Engine 4 and Unreal Engine 5.
“Come, join our team and work with us on the next Mass Effect game,” Holmes wrote on social media. This recruiting announcement does not necessarily confirm that the game will run on some form of the Unreal Engine. However, other sources have claimed that the upcoming project will be using the Unreal Engine 5 specifically.
Just this September, sources revealed that BioWare was considering different options for Mass Effect’s development engines. EA has its very own Frostbite engine. However, it would seem that the devs have decided to go with EA’s Unreal Engine. If this is true, EA will be paying Epic a licensing fee for this partnership.
Apparently, devs were relatively challenged in working with Frostbite for Mass Effect: Andromeda. It reportedly did not contain specific engineering to handle the types of gaming experiences that BioWare releases.
With that said, it was no surprise to the fans when the devs decided to shift to the Unreal Engine 5 for the franchise’s next entry. Now, the devs are hopeful to be gearing towards a much better spot development-wise moving forward.
The Mass Effect: Legendary Edition did not use the Unreal Engine 4 and ran on Unreal Engine 3 instead. “One of the things we did earl on, to sort of set some context, is we actually talked to the people at Epic,” BioWare’s Mac Walters explained. “It very quickly became clear that the level of jump would really change fundamentally what the trilogy was, how it felt, how it played.”
