The Suicide Squad Stars Share Their Thoughts On The David Ayer Cut

The Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie and Joel Kinnamanweighed in on the David Ayer cut of the 2016 film. With the new James Gunn film now playing in theaters, fans are reminiscing about the squads' first time on the big screen.

The Suicide Squad will neither be a reboot or a sequel to the previous film. Instead, it will be its own standalone film that pays respect to the one before it. During an interview, the cast members who were in the original film spoke about whether or not they want to see an Ayer cut of Suicide Squad given Zack Snyder was able to release a cut of his Justice League film after Joss Whedon took over during the initial filming.

“I think that’s all a very complicated situation that I am probably not responsible for,” Robbie told Variety. "I would want to see the cut of every movie I’ve been a part of that I’ve never seen… sometimes I don’t see it until half the country has seen it. You don’t really get to see the different iterations along the way, unless you’re a producer.” Recently, Ayer wrote a statement on Twitter that slammed the studio and theatrically released version of Suicide Squad, “I put my life into ‘Suicide Squad.’ I made something amazing. My cut is an intricate and emotional journey with some bad people who are shit on and discarded (a theme that resonates in my soul.) The studio cut is not my movie," he wrote before adding that he will no longer speak publicly on the matter. His message prompted a response from Gunn, who expressed his love and admiration for Ayer.

Joel Kinnaman, who plays Rick Flag, said he would love to see a director's cut of the Suicide Squad, even though he didn't necessarily enjoy the last half of the film because he thinks it had conflicted visions. It sounds like Gunn's The Suicide Squad won't get the same treatment as the first film because he has a single vision for what the film will be and was given carte blanche by the studio. This Suicide Squad will also feature a lot of the less popular villains.

Recently, Margot Robbie has praised James Gunn for his portrayal of Harley Quinn and allowing her to be "let loose" on her own path. Harley is typically associated with being in a one-sided, toxic relationship with the Joker, so it's good to see her on her own as a standout character. Harley has enough combat capability to stand up for herself, so hopefully, The Suicide Squad gives her that shine she deserves. Even with the upcoming Suicide Squad video game on the way, fans should expect to see her more often.

As for the Ayer cut, it seems the director's attempt to close the door on the matter, at least publicly, won't stop certain fans from asking for his version of Suicide Squad to be released in some form. The HBO Max premiere of Zack Snyder's Justice League, which resulted from a years-long campaign, has probably given fans the sense that Warner Bros. will cave to their demands if they keep up the pressure.

The Suicide Squad is now playing in theaters.
