It continues to be a fantastic time to be Batman fan, as DC’s virtual FanDome convention has revealed information on no less than six different Batman-related projects. The virtual convention gave fans a peek at a new Gotham Knights video game, a trailer for Robert Pattinson’s The Batman, and revealed that four new animated Batman features were in the works as well.
The first film will be Batman: Soul of the Dragon, which is set in the 1970’s and features David Giuntoli as the voice of Batman. Following that up is Justice Society: World War II, which is a brand-new story expected to release sometime in Spring of 2021. After that, however, is the biggest news yet: a two-part animated feature adaptation of classic comic story Batman: The Long Halloween.

Originally written by Jeph Loeb and drawn by Tim Sale, The Long Halloween is a continuation of Loeb’s classic Batman: Year One story, which had a huge impact on the character, and became the de facto Batman origin story for most interpretations of the character. The story follows Batman through part of his early career, tracking down the Holiday Killer, who murders a new victim on each significant calendar holiday. It also involves Batman continuing to tackle the mob, working with Jim Gordon and Harvey Dent, as well as running into famous villains like the Joker, Scarecrow, and Catwoman.
The timing of this announcement is interesting, as rumors have swirled that Matt Reeves’ The Batman film will also be inspired by The Long Halloween, with Warner Bros. executives stating the film is a “Year 2” Batman story. The Batman is also expected to hit theaters in October of 2021, adding further fuel to the speculation. For those more interested in the direct adaptation, however, the first part of Batman: The Long Halloween hopes to release in summer of 2021, with the second half slated for fall of the next year. It seems that whatever flavor of Batman people prefer, there’s going to be plenty of options for fans over the next few years.
Batman: The Long Halloween part one will be available Summer 2021.
