Video Shows Why Robbie Amell is the Perfect Casting for Chris Redfield in Resident Evil Movie Reboot

The Resident Evil franchise has a dubious track record with movie adaptations, especially after the original Resident Evil films threw out much of the games' plot and let new protagonist Alice overshadow the original cast. However, Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City may have hit gold by casting Robbie Amell as Chris Redfield, who notoriously starred in Resident Evil 5.

While Chris Redfield has appeared in many games, including the original Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Code Veronica, and most recently Resident Evil Village, his appearance in Resident Evil 5 helped to solidify his modern image among fans of the series. Individual fans may find the game more funny than scary, but the moment where he punches away a boulder that's bigger than he is has become a highlight of the series.

Redditor nitrous33 did a bit of digging and discovered that Amell has done some impressive punching in a past movie. In the 2010 live-action made-for-TV movie Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster, Amell, who plays Fred Jones, is shown punching a column so hard it snaps in half, leading to a minor cave-in. Another of the reboot movie's stars reports that Resident Evil: Welcome To Raccoon City will feel like the games, suggesting that Amell's previous punching experience may come in handy.

In the video, which is just two seconds long, a quick time event command has been layered over the footage. The QTE prompts a theoretical player to hit the A button to throw a hook shortly before Amell punches through the column. In this movie, Amell appears to be in a mine and the column in question seems to be a wooden support beam, but the moment has more than a little in common with Chris Redfield's boulder-punching feat. Chris Redfield has a history of questionable decisions, but that punch may be one of the most impressive and iconic scenes in the franchise.

As of this writing, this post appears to have opened the eyes of a few Resident Evil fans who were unaware of Amell's history. One poster complimented the punch and commented that they wouldn't want to be in Amell's way. Another referenced a joke in the Resident Evil fan community describing Chris Redfield's boulder-punching tendencies. While many misconceptions about Resident Evil have built up over the years, the boulder-punching incident is very canon and fits neatly into the more action-oriented direction the franchise has headed in over the years. This scene of Amell punching through a wooden beam may reassure fans who were unsure about his acting credentials.

Resident Evil 5 is out now for PC, PS3, PS4, Switch, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
