2K's rumoured Marvel XCOM game reportedly won't have Marvel heroes in it, and will instead focus on custom-created characters.
As reported by VGC, GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb discussed the unannounced game during his latest Giant Bomb podcast, revealing that it won't feature existing Marvel characters and that it might be announced during Gamescom.

On the podcast, Grubb said, "The reason that it might still be a new property even though it’s a Marvel thing is that, this is not going to pick up any existing franchise in the [Marvel Cinematic Universe], it’s not even going to be existing characters. So it’s not going to have any existing MCU characters, but it should take place in the wider universe. The game is going to focus on the supernatural elements of the Marvel universe".
Grubb continued by explaining that the game will reportedly let you create your own superhero team, but that it won't be featuring known characters. He said, “I do think that the character that you’re playing will be a customisable superhero, or at least the team might be customisable, so it’s still going to have XCOM in that way, but that’s why it’s not going to be taking place in any existing lineage of franchises. So I guess they might consider this a new property.”
The last bit of information that Grubb revealed is that he expects a reveal to happen during Gamescom later this month. This lines up with reports on the game that have been ongoing since June, with several insiders claiming that it would be announced during 2021. This is the first time that further details on the project have been revealed, although, with this rumour, it's possible that we'll be hearing about it as early as this month.
2K itself has made reference to Firaxis working on "exciting projects", which seems to back up the rumour that whatever is next from the developer has some sort of link to the Marvel universe.
