Marvel’s Midnight Suns has gained the interest of a lot of gamers through its reveal trailer, with many interested to see how well superheroes will mesh with Firaxis Games’ unique style. However, it seems like some Marvel’s Midnight Suns players are more concerned with whether the cast can be romanced.
Part of this intrigue likely comes from Marvel’s Midnight Suns reveal trailer. Through this debut footage, it is confirmed that players will be taking control of a fully original character named The Hunter. The daughter of Lilith, the game’s main antagonist, players will be able to fully customize the appearance and moveset of this fully original Marvel superhero. With players given so much freedom in their character’s design, it makes sense that many would wonder if that freedom extends to relationships.

Unfortunately, those hopung to romance the characters in Marvel’s Midnight Suns are out of luck. In an interview with IGN, Firaxis Games’ creative director Jake Solomon confirmed that there will not be full-on romances available in the game. Players will be able to form very close friendships with the featured Avengers and X-Men, however, with Solomon stating that these bonds will be “as deep as friendships can go.” Still, those looking to have romantic time with Tony Stark or Carol Danvers may be a bit disappointed.
Still, the explanation that Solomon gave for the lack of romance makes sense. While it is true that The Hunter is fully original, and as such has no romantic ties to other characters in the Marvel universe, the same cannot be said for those fighting alongside them. In the comics, Carol Danvers and James Rhodes have a well-documented romance, as do Captain America and Sharon Carter. As such, potential romances would get in the way of the established history of the “well-defined” Marvel characters.
Still, while romance is off the table, Marvel fans should at least be happy to know that they can establish some close bonds with the characters in the game. The hub area known as The Abbey will give players the chance to spend time with the heroes of their choosing, raising their friendship level to acquire new abilities for them. New costumes will also be unlocked, making all the time spent with the game’s hero roster beneficial. With The Abbey also offering a third person point of view, it should be a nice change from the camera used in the tactics-based gameplay of Marvel’s Midnight Suns.
It remains to be seen what story Marvel’s Midnight Suns will tell when it comes to these characters, as it is only a loose adaptation of the comic book storyline of the same name. Still, fans now have confirmation that their relationships with the established Marvel heroes will be purely platonic.
Marvel's Midnight Suns releases March 2022 on PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
