The Persona franchise has been rocking for years now, and with the success that was Persona 5 and Persona 4: Golden, Atlus and Sega have all the incentive to push more entries in the franchise. The series enjoyed a slew of mainline entries and spin-offs that are even considered canon, as well as, mobile & web games.
In case if you didn’t know, Persona debuted as a spin-off of Shin Megami Tensei, hence explaining why the first four games had the SMT label in the title only for P5 to drop that in the end. We take a look at every Persona game by starting with main games, spin-offs and also mobile & web games.
Main Games
A section dedicated to the main Persona Games.
Revelations: Persona
Release Date: September 20, 1996
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS1 | PC
Alternative Title: Megami Ibunroku Persona
Type: Canon
The game that started it all, the one that introduced the “Persona” title to the world. After the success of Shin Megami Tensei if, Atlus was determined to make more games focusing on the struggles of young adults while also retaining the same atmosphere of the Shin Megami Tensei series. Multiple staff from previous projects were on board including, Kazuma Kaneko, Kouji Okada, and Shoji Meguro. So, it was obvious Revelations: Persona was an ambitious project.
The story centred around a group of high school students who happen to experience a series of abnormal activities at their school. These students are granted special abilities to summon beings known as Persona that’ll help them to confront the demons that assail them. The world is in deep danger and only they can save it.
Looking back, Revelations: Persona’s combat mechanic is pretty dated and difficult to get into if you haven’t played such a game before. The negotiation system is also tough to handle early on. It makes negotiations from Shin Megami Tensei 3: Nocturne feels like child’s play. The soundtracks on the other hand are absolutely great, and they’re more than enough to keep you hooked up for a while. Despite Revelations: Persona establishing several core gameplay elements that made Persona what it is, the first entry in the franchise is hard to get into for newcomers.
Shin Megami Tensei Persona
Release Date: April 29, 2009
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PSP
Alternative Title: Persona
Type: Canon- Remake
Thirteen years after the release of the original, a remake of Revelations: Persona happened. The remake introduced new soundtracks, improved visuals, remade FMVs and more. As far as gameplay goes, the PSP remake is mostly the same as the original. The combat mechanics will still prove to be dated for those who aren’t accustomed to such games. Thankfully, a guide will help you get through the game because you’ll need it.
The Persona community recommends the remake for newcomers. But on the one hand, there is a side that recommends experiencing both the original and the remake.
Persona 2: Innocent Sin & Eternal Punishment
Release Date: June 29, 2000
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS1 | PSP (Remake)
Alternative Title: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 2 – Innocent Sin
Type: Canon
Persona 2 was originally released in two parts with Innocent Sin being the first part and Eternal Punishment being the second exclusively in Japan. While Revelations: Persona was the first Shin Megami Tensei game to be released in the west, Persona 2 remake is regarded as the second game to land in the west as well.
One of the reasons that make Persona 2 worth the discussion is the fact that Maya Amano was the first playable female protagonist in the franchise. Perhaps this may not prove to be a big deal nowadays, but with a genre crowded with male characters as the leading protagonist back then, a shift in character selection brought a change of pace. Unlike cheerful entries in the franchise like Persona 4, P2 features a serious story and convoluted plot
Similar to Persona on the PSP, Persona 2 went on to receive a remake on the same hardware. The original was released exclusively in Japan, the remake on the one hand was localized in Europe and America as well. You can still play the originals using a PS1 emulator and an English Fan Patch which can be obtained online.
Persona 3
Release Date: July 13, 2006
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS2 | PSP
Alternative Title: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 – The Journey
Type: Canon
One of the best entries in the franchise that provides hours upon hours of absolute entertainment. Persona 3 was actually the first game in the franchise to hit the PS2 back in the day, and it enjoyed critical acclaim as well commercial success that led to the release of several editions that I’ll tackle below.
Persona 3 introduces new surprises ranging from a revamped combat style, the introduction of a new mechanic called Social Links that prove to be useful in-game, and dating elements to the interesting main dungeon, Tartarus. Persona 3 also drops the repetitive sudden enemy encounter by making enemies visible to the player. That way you could avoid your enemy or proceed to engage if you are levelled up enough.
Like I said earlier above, P3 enjoyed lucrative reception, and that resulted in the release of several editions. Let’s check them below:
- Persona 3 FES: Also called Persona 3 FES: The Answer or also known as Episode Aegis, is an improved re-release of the original P3 that comes packed with additional content, and Aegis as a playable character. The game also acts as an epilogue to the original. Additionally, P3FES features a new hard mode difficulty for those who want to put their skills to the test.
- Persona 3 Portable: Or simply known as P3P, is a PSP/PSVita port of the original P3. Unlike the original, P3P doesn’t feature 3D environments. Instead, it replaces all social interactions with an interface similar to that of visual light novel titles. P3P also features two main characters: a female and a male, both follow almost the same plotline with a few changes. The former introduces two new difficulty modes over the original and FES, including an easy mode and a very hard (Maniac) mode.
Persona 4
Release Date: July 10, 2008
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS2 | PS Vita| PC
Alternative Title: Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4
Type: Canon
Persona 3 still remains one of the saddest and darkest entries in the franchise. Persona 4, on the other hand, drops that by following a different approach. And that paid off since the 4th entry outsold the 3rd one by a lot.
Gameplay-wise, P4 and P3 don’t differ too much, they’re almost the same. In the original Persona 3, players couldn’t control each member of the party, but with Persona 4 you have full control over it. The graphics are also similar to one another, but you’ll find that in some parts, Persona 4 is superior.
Since Persona 4 proved to be a success, a re-release titled Persona 4: Golden was released on the PS Vita back in 2012, and on PC back in 2020. This re-release comes loaded with several new content and features that’ll keep you hooked forever.
Persona 5
Release Date: September 15, 2016
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS3 | PS4
Alternative Title: P5
Type: Canon
Persona 5 improves on anything that came before it to bring you the best Persona game so far. While it’s true some may argue that it’s not the best entry, sales say the opposite. Persona 5 revamps the entire visual style by making the whole game into cel-shaded graphics instead of following chibi-like models seen in Persona 3 and Persona 4. Additionally, Persona 5 was the first game to tick off the Shin Megami Tensei title off the box cover of the game.
This entry was a new breath of fresh air as it revamped mostly everything, from the gameplay, world navigation to the funky music and the game elements. P5 is incredibly stylish, and it’s easy to lose yourself in it. Hours upon hours of turn-based entertainment awaits you.
Such success has led Atlus to release a new edition titled Persona 5: Royal on the PS4 that comes with new content, costumes from previous games, music from P3 and P4 and additional items.
Spin-Offs
A section dedicated to spin-off entries in the franchise. Bear in mind that some spin-offs are also considered canon.
Megami Ibunroku Persona Digital Collection
Release Date: 1999
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PC (Abandonware)
Type: Spin-Off
A mini-game collection spin-off that acts as a sequel to the events of the original Persona game. Unfortunately, you can’t get it anywhere legally as the game was released exclusively in Japan, and it’s an abandonware by now.
The overall story takes place immediately after the events of Revelations: Persona, and it centres around some sort of festival events where students participate with the goal of collecting tickets.
There is little to no information about this game other than it being played via a Point & Click perspective and containing 12 mini-games. These mini-games are a series of questions, puzzles, shooting targets, singing with the lyrics and more. The only way to play this entry is through a Virtual Machine emulator and an Abandonware ISO.
Persona 4 Arena
Release Date: March 1, 2012
Developer: Arc System Works
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: Arcade | PS3 | Xbox 360 | PSN | Xbox One Digital Download
Type: Spin-Off- Canon
Persona 4 Arena or also known as Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena in Japan, is a 2D fighting spin-off game for both P3 and P4. The plot is set immediately after Persona 4 and it features several characters from P3 and the former. If you’re planning to delve into this title before playing Persona 3 and Persona 4, then prepare to have major plot points spoiled for you. It is highly recommended to play previous titles before delving into this entry.
Fans of the Guilty Gear franchise will find themselves at home. The gameplay is smooth and easy to get into. Even those who aren’t good at fighting games will find P4 Arena to be forgiven when it comes to the difficulty. And as you would expect from a Persona game, the soundtracks are incredible and memorable.
The arena was a commercial success, and that led to the release of a sequel titled. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax
Release Date: November 28, 2013
Developer: Arc System Works
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: Arcade | PS3 | Xbox 360 | PSN | Xbox One Digital Download | PC | PS4 | Nintendo Switch
Type: Spin-Off- Canon
The direct sequel to Persona 4 Arena was released one year after, and it continued the events of the former. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax refines everything from its predecessor to bring the player the ultimate experience. Arc System Works listened to fans’ feedback and did their best to deliver the best they could.
Persona 4 Arena and Ultimax were a commercial and critical success at the end of the day, and we can only hope that we may see more fighting games from the Persona franchise in the foreseeable future.
Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth
Release Date: June 5, 2014
Developer: P-Studio
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: 3DS
Type: Spin-Off-Canon
The success of Persona 4 Arena was incentive enough to push Atlus into making more crossovers between two separate Persona titles once again. This time combining Persona 3 and Persona 4. Featuring characters with deformed chibi appearances, and gameplay similar to Etrian Odyssey, Persona Q was the first entry in the franchise to be released on a Nintendo platform, specifically the 3DS.
Persona Q was a unique take on a dungeon crawler RPG, but when comparing it to mainline entries in the franchise, it’s obvious that it’s not as memorable as its predecessors. Still, it was generous of Atlus to make such a fan serviced game.
Persona 4: Dancing All Night
Release Date: June 25, 2015
Developer: P-Studio
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS Vita | PS4
Type: Spin-Off-Canon
Originally released exclusively on the PS Vita, Dancing All Night is a rhythm music dancing game similar to the likes of the Hatsune Miku and Space Channel series. The title of the game is not lying at all, you will be dancing all night as the soundtracks are on point.
Three years later, Dancing All Night would go on to receive a PS4 port that boosted its recognition. If you’re a fan of rhythm music-based games, Dancing All Night falls into your basket.
Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight
Release Date: May 24, 2018
Developer: P-Studio
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS Vita | PS4
Type: Spin-Off-Canon
Featuring the cast from Persona 3, Dancing in Moonlight resembles Dancing All Night in almost every aspect. While both games play the same, Persona 3 Dancing in Moonlight comes with several improvements over its predecessor.
Surprisingly, all of these rhythm music-based games sold considerably well, including Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight as well. Who knows, perhaps in the future you may see more of these unique takes from Atlus.
Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth
Release Date: November 29, 2018
Developer: P-Studio
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: 3DS
Timeline: Spin-Off-Canon
What if you wanted a Persona 5 port on the Switch, but Atlus said: Persona Q2 on the 3DS? Still, Persona Q2 is far from being a bad game. The first Persona Q featured characters from P3 and P4, while PQ2 featured the Phantom Thieves band.
This particular was pretty overlooked due to the fact that it was released one year after the release of the Nintendo Switch. At the time, many have moved on to superior hardware. With the rise of the Persona franchise popularity, we can only hope that a port or a sequel to this entry will become a reality in the foreseeable future.
Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight
Release Date: May 24, 2018
Developer: P-Studio
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: PS Vita | PS4
Timeline: Spin-Off-Canon
Yet another dancing game added to the rooster. Released simultaneously alongside Persona 3: Dancing in Moonlight, the two are identical to one another, except the music of course. Though, Persona 5 is an improvement over the latter in many different ways.
Persona 5: Dancing in Starlight is the latest entry in the dancing trilogy. Perhaps, a release of Persona 6 may persuade Atlus into making more of these.
Persona 5: Strikers
Release Date: February 20, 2020
Developer: Omega Force
Publisher: Sega
Platforms: PS4 | Nintendo Switch | PC
Timeline: Spin-Off-Canon
Years of waiting for a Persona 5 port on PC or the Nintendo Switch has resulted in the emergence of Persona 5: Strikers. A spin-off of Persona 5 taking place several months after the events of P5 and follows the Phantom Thieves during their summer vacation. It is essentially a sequel which marks it as a canonical entry in the franchise as well.
Developed by Omega Force, known mostly for Musou titles such as Dynasty Warriors, Persona 5: Strikers doesn’t feature any turn-based RPG mechanics. Instead, the game follows the Musou formula where you fight waves after waves of enemies similar to other titles by Omega Force.

A section dedicated to obscure mobile & web games from the franchise. Note that these games cannot be obtained anywhere these days.
Persona 3: The Night Before
Release Date: June 1, 2006
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: Browser
Japanese Title: ペルソナ3 ザ・ナイト・ビフォア
Atlus’ efforts to market the game into places reached the point where Persona entries were coming to the web as flash type games for browsers. It is still unknown whether these browser-based games are accessible or not. Or whether an emulator will emerge, allow the industry to preserve every Atlus game released exclusively on the web.
Megami Ibunroku Persona: Ikuu no Tou Hen
Release Date: December 1st, 2006
Developer: BBMF
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: Java (iAppli) | Samsung Smartphones (S!Appli) | Web-EZ
Translated Title: Alternate Goddess Tale Persona -Otherworld Tower Chapter
Ikuu no Tou Hen was one of Atlus’ first steps into the mobile gaming industry. Developed in a collaboration between Bbmf and Atlus, this particular entry was released exclusively in Japan on some high-end mobile phones at the time. Most of which are obscure and hard to find these days.
The game is a 3D dungeon crawler RPG based on Revelations: Persona. The gameplay is pretty much identical to the former, however, the story is different. Persona: Ikuu no Tou Hen, unfortunately, released unto a cell subscription service that costed 3USD a month. The service was originally founded and operated by Atlus until it was acquired by BBMF. Web-EZ or also known as ez-appli, remains an interesting subscription as it featured the following:
- A collection of mobile wallpapers including protagonists from the Megami Tensei series.
- Online trading card game titled Mobile Phone Demon Collection
- Megami Tensei ringtones.
It is unknown when the service was discontinued, but you can always see all information from the archived Web-EZ website.

Platforms: Mobile Phones
Japanese Title: 女神転生QIX ペルソナ3
Megami Tensei QIX is a puzzle game based on Persona 3, developed by Atlus and it plays similarly to the QIX game it was titled after. Megami Tensei Chaining Soul: Persona 3

Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: Java (iAppli) | Samsung Smartphones (S!Appli) | Web-EZ
Japanese Title: 女神転生CHAINING SOUL ペルソナ3
Chaining Soul has similar gameplay to the likes of Candy Crush and Bejeweled. Players have to channel orbs with the same colour together in order to perform an attack on the ” Shadows “. If players keep channelling colours, they will eventually summon a Persona which inflicts high damage.
Similar to Bejeweled, the game is presented through stages, and each stage has a time limit. Players have to quickly defeat the shadows before the time runs out. Additionally, there are two mods to go through; Normal Game and Score Attack. The latter is all about attempting to earn the highest score by using special attacks and channelling orbs.
Megami Tensei Chaining Soul: Persona 3 was clearly a low budget title that was intended to cater to users who just want to kill time on their mobile phones.

In case you didn’t know about this, Atlus developed two spin-offs for the original Persona 2. One titled Lost Memories and the other Infinity Mask. Gameplay-wise, these two are pretty akin to the original P2. Featuring the cast from the original, the story centres around the concept of Shadow Self and Ideal Self. The former is a part of themselves that they don’t want to be associated with. Meanwhile, the latter is the good part of themselves. The entire story revolves around destroying the Shadow Selves and the spirit of Longinus.
Aegis: The First Mission
Release Date: October 29, 2007
Developer: BBMF
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: NTT DoCoMo Mobile | Softbank Mobile
Japanese Title: アイギス THE FIRST MISSION, Aigisu Za Fāsuto Misshon
Timeline: Prequel–Canon
While Aegis: The First Mission can now be considered obscure, it still remains an important entry in the franchise due to the fact it’s considered a prequel to P3. Set 10 years before the events of Persona 3, players assume the role of a robot named Aegis (Aigis) who wakes up in the Kirijo Ergonomics Research Laboratory lab located in Yakushima Island. Aigis is in terrible shape and needs to be fixed and improved. To improve her capabilities as a robot, she participates in a series of training exercises initiated by Souta Aizawa and Yuu Kimijima. Aigis has to tackle all these exercises that see you encountering countless shadows and defeat them.
Originally planned to be titled ” Aegis Zero” the name later shifted to ” The First Mission, the gameplay is 2D rather than 3D, and doesn’t include any turn-based mechanics. Instead, the game is a full Action-RPG. Aegis is able to double jump, attack her enemies in real-time, and summon her own Persona, Palladion. Fans of Persona 3 and Persona 4 will surely like this one if they ever manage to find it anywhere. The software that hosted such a game is no longer available, which is a shame.
Persona 3 Em
Release Date: November 26, 2007

Japanese Title: ペルソナ3エム – Perusona Suri Emu
Persona 3 Em is a mobile entry in the franchise that is an attempt to emulate the original title on the go. The story takes place amidst the Yakushima trip of Persona 3 and it features the original cast from the game.
Gameplay-wise, the game attempts to emulate mostly all the features from Persona 3 including:
- Social Links
- 3D dungeon exploration and a battle system similar to the original
- The ability to choose between dialogue choices while bearing in mind that such choices play a role in the overall story
- Persona Fusion in the Velvet Room
- Similar dungeon to Tartarus known as Oneiros which includes 80 floors.
For a mobile phone game, Atlus has done a great job at attempting to emulate the original on cellphones. We can only hope that such an abandonware title won’t go to waste and that the community will manage to revive it in the foreseeable future.
Persona Ain Soph
Release Date: February 26th, 2008
Developer: Atlus
Publisher: Atlus
Platforms: Browser
Japanese Title: ペルソナ アインソフ, Perusona Ain Sofu

Players meet Igor in the Velvet Room once again who informs them that a nightmarish known as Qliphoth has emerged. Players find themselves stuck in this world, and the only way to escape is to awaken the power of the Persona.
The gameplay is similar to that of a gacha title. Playing for too long accumulates fatigue, once this fatigue reaches its peak, players have to wait until the next day to progress. While you wait, you can purchase items and tools to prepare yourself for battle. Unfortunately, if you had hopes of playing this entry, you’ll be very disappointed as the game closed back in 2010. There’s no way to play it these days.

Additionally, the Social Links feature was swapped with Arcana Points. Players earn these points if they team up with other players who possess the same Arcana. And similar to Social Links, the points you earn will help you level up your Persona.

This free portal application acted as a gateway for fans to stay up to date with anything related to the Persona franchise. The app featured a sort of calendar where users could mark certain dates as their favourites in order to receive a notification whenever an event is available.
