If watching women dominate for charity is your jam, you’re going to want to check out Flame Fatales. The all-women speedrunning event is making its return in August and will once again benefit Malala Fund.
Hosting a women-only speedrunning event has been a tradition since 2019, when the first Fatales marathon was organized by Hannah Marrcarr. The original event, which was titled Frame Fatales, began as a passion project to showcase women speedrunners and encourage more participation. Little did Marrcarr know that the event would turn out to be a huge success, prompting subsequent marathons in the years to follow that would draw in increasing numbers of female speedrunners. Last year’s events, Frost Fatales and Fleet Fatales, managed to raise over $54,000 and $80,000 for Malala Fund respectively.

Flame Fatales, a summer edition of the event, will serve as a sort of speedrunning double feature alongside Summer Games Done Quick, which just wrapped up on July 4 with almost $3 million raised for Doctors Without Borders. The event’s lineup, much like this year’s SGDQ, includes an interesting mix of games. The schedule lists speedrun favorites like Super Metroid, standout attempts like an impossible any% mod run on Hollow Knight, and unexpected entries like Disney's 102 Dalmatians: Puppies to the Rescue.
The week-long marathon will run from August 15 to 21 and will be streamed on the Games Done Quick Twitch channel. Those tuning in should be sure to donate, as all proceeds will benefit Malala Fund, a charity that seeks to better the lives of girls around the world. Specifically, Malala Fund invests in local education activists and advocates for the resources and policy changes necessary to provide all girls with a secondary education. By watching and donating, viewers can raise the voices of both girls and women across the globe.
What started as a modest event has quickly grown into a celebration of women in gaming capable of raising thousands of dollars for charity. What is more, the event is inclusive of all individuals who identify as women, making it home to a safe and supportive community. With current trends showing a rise in female gamers, events like Flame Fatales are sure to grow in size and number in the years to come.
