It has been a few weeks since Captain Carter first appeared in Marvel Studios' What If…? and altered the story of Captain America. This time allowed one cosplayer to perfect her take on the woman behind the shield.
Peggy Carter is usually associated with her role in Steve Rogers' life that eventually led him to make an unpopular decision in Avengers: Endgame. However, What If…? has challenged the basis of Rogers' path to be the star-spangled hero just as this cosplayer has begun to alter the appearance of Captain Carter.

The UK cosplayer, "@charrar.b" has a strong presence on Instagram because of the innovativeness of her cosplay. For her Captain Carter look, "@charrar.b" uses a deep blue to set the foundation of Carter's suit. Layered with white paint to give the blue a more authentic look, it looks like the suit made for Captain Carter. The Union Jack mark of the UK across the suit's chest reminds everyone of the new woman who has taken the title of "Captain America." This look is also complete with brown straps over the cosplayer's shoulders. These painted straps are the harness both Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter wear in order to carry the shield on their backs. As a subtle piece of the Captain look, its inclusion attests to "@charrar.b's" attention to detail.
That attention to detail doesn't end in the craftsmanship of the costume itself. The makeup "@charrar.b" has used to complete the look is an ode to the era Captain Carter first emerged in. The light blush on the cheeks, subtle use of eyeliner and mascara, as well as neutral lip color, references the way women in the '40s would traditionally wear their makeup. "@charrar.b." also has her hair combed and pinned in a way that a woman may have had it done in the '40s.
Peggy Carter didn't need to become Captain Carter to prove her strength. She has gone on to have success in her own right, helping to found S.H.I.E.L.D. along with Howard Stark. Carter's own series Agent Carter is a testament to the strength she has without having taken the super-soldier serum. Now that What If…? has given it to her, there is no limit to what she can accomplish.
With the attention to detail cosplaying requires with clothing, the fact that this cosplayer could pull it off with paint is astounding. The authenticity of the makeup and hairstyle choice goes a long way to making this look feel real. With the current version of Captain Carter only being animated, "@charrar.b's" look gives Marvel fans an accurate depiction of what the hero would look like in the flesh.
The first three episodes of What If…? are now streaming on Disney Plus.
