Complete Romance Guide For Fable 3

Fable 3 is a fantasy title in which you play as a prince or princess of Albion, a noble country inspired by Britain. Albion is going through its industrial revolution and the monarchy (your brother is the King) is under tremendous pressure. You'll need to fight your way to take the crown for yourself — but there are lots of ways to get distracted along the way.

Undoubtedly, one of the most fun ways is to start falling in love. Whether you prefer to have three families that don't know about each other, sleep with prostitutes, or start a prim-and-proper family in the wealthiest neighbourhood in Albion, this guide will help to get you there.

The Road To Rule

The Road To Rule is a mechanic in Fable III that's introduced fairly early on in the game. By progressing through it and spending Guild Seals to open chests, you get closer and closer to becoming the Ruler of Albion. You'll need to unlock a few chests before you can engage in all the romance content that the game has to offer.

You have to unlock the…

  • Friend Expression Pack at Gate 2 (allows you to pose for, chat with, or whistle for the citizens of Albion)
  • Lover Expression Pack at Gate 3 (allows you to dance, hug, and kiss citizens, even eventually becoming best friends or lovers with them)
  • Family Pack at Gate 3 (allows you to get married, buy a house, have children, and adopt)

Other expressions in packs that you can earn later on will help in your endeavors to be a good lover, spouse, and/or parent, but these three are the bare essentials.

Dating And Sexuality

To date an NPC, you'll need to build a relationship with them. Your relationship with a given character will be at one of five levels:

  • Fear
  • Hate
  • Neutral
  • Friends
  • Lover/Best Friends

Thankfully, the relationship level is easy to change if you put a little elbow grease into it. Even if you just murdered everyone in their neighbourhood, you can still earn an NPC's affection with enough time and care. There are two ways that the player improves (or destroys) their relationship with an NPC.

The first way is via "expressions" — basically, this just means talking to the character. You want to use the "Good Expressions,"not the "Evil" ones, to improve your relationship. Good Expressions include:

  • Shake Hands
  • Whistle
  • Hero Pose
  • Chat
  • Dance
  • Hug
  • Kiss
  • Tickle
  • Pat-A-Cake
  • Chicken Dance

Each time you do one of these Good Expressions, the NPC will think better of you.

Eventually, however, expressions just aren't enough anymore. That's why the second way that players improve their relationships is via Relationship Quests. Once a player has done enough Good Expressions that the NPC wants their relationship to go up a level (i.e. from Neutral to Friends), they'll give you a Relationship Quest. Once that's been completed, your relationship will go up by one level and you can continue to improve it with Good Expressions again. There are five kinds of Relationship Quests (all of which are fairly simple):

  • Courier (delivering the NPCs object to another NPC)
  • Fetch (the NPC asks the Hero to find their lost object)
  • Date (asks the Hero to take them on a date — only given if the NPC is sexually compatible and the NPC is already "Friends" with the Hero)
  • Gift (asks the Hero to bring them a particular item as a gift — only given if the NPC is not sexually compatible with the Hero and you are already "Friends" with them)
  • Home Improvement (asks the Hero to improve the family home or move their family somewhere better — only given by the Hero's spouse if their living conditions are making them unhappy)

Sexuality

In order to romance a given citizen, they'll need to be attracted to you — just like in real life! You won't be given the option to become romantic with a straight man if you're also male, no matter how much you tickle him. To discover the NPC's sexual orientation, simply interact with them and hold down the right trigger.

Sexuality can be listed as:

  • Straight
  • Gay
  • Lesbian
  • Bisexual
  • Celibate

Marriage And Divorce

To get married to someone, you need:

  • to be at the "Lovers" relationship level
  • to own a home
  • to have enough money to pay for a wedding
  • to have a Wedding Ring (which can be bought at a jewellery store in any major city, discovered in dug-up chests, or found by other means)

When your lover accepts the proposal, you'll be prompted to do two things. First, you need to choose where your marital home will be. Second, you'll choose a wedding location. The different regions offer unique ceremonies at varying prices depending on how high-class they are. After this, you're whisked away to the ceremony!

Keep in mind that your wedding ceremony and subsequent living situation will affect your spouse's happiness — a beggar will be thrilled to live in a palace, while a nobleman wouldn't be so happy living in a dweller wagon.

Divorce

This is no fantasy land where you can ignore your spouse and/or children immediately after getting married or giving birth! No one cares if you're the King or Queen — your spouse still needs a good place to live. In Fable 3, you can leave your spouse or your spouse can choose to leave you. A spouse will get fed up and divorce you if they are too poor, if you neglect them and/or their children's needs, and if you have a bad relationship with them. Of course, if you're actively trying to get divorced, you can speed up this process by using "Evil Expressions" and ruining your relationship. In that case, you can divorce them yourself.

The ramifications include:

  • your shared house being sold and the funds divided
  • your shared children becoming orphans (though you can adopt them back)

Sex And Children

The "Sex" interaction can occur in or out of wedlock. However, if you want to have sex with someone before marrying them, the person needs to have the "promiscuous" or "flirty" trait and you'll need to reach the "Lover" relationship level with them. Or, you could hire a prostitute. Once you're married, you'll be able to have sex with your spouse regardless of their traits.

condoms exist in Fable 3 as a way to avoid contracting STIs, which can genuinely be passed to you by your sexual partner(s). Be sure to stock up. They need to be used to avoid STIs regardless of whether you are having sex with someone who is the same gender as you or not.

Children

Children are never born out of wedlock. Once you're married, any sex you have with your partner (if the relationship is heterosexual) can result in a child — though condoms can prevent this just as they do STIs.Here are a few things to know about the mechanics of having children:

  • Your child's appearance and dress will be determined based on the NPC parent's spawn location. A child could be middle-class, working-class, upper-middle-class, Auroran, Dweller, Ecological, or noble
  • Your child's traits will be determined by how many Good vs Evil choices you make and the expressions you use
  • You can only have 2 children per marital home
  • Usually, one child is born after consummating the marriage for the first time — but to have a second one, the home you live in needs to have two children's beds

If you don't want to (or can't) have children biologically, there's also a system of adoption. It costs 500 gold to adopt a child. This is the only way to have children without being married first -— if the player isn't married, they'll be prompted to choose a family home when they adopt.
