Creator Of PS5 Teardown Video "Feels Confident" New Model Runs Hotter

Last weekend, tech YouTuber Austin Evans shared his PS5 teardown video that revealed new models may run hotter. Following a week of controversy over his findings, Evans published an additional video to reaffirm he "feels confident" the new model runs hotter and just what that difference could mean.

In the original teardown footage, Evans explains how the new PS5 model runs a few degrees hotter than its original version. A side-by-side breakdown revealed the heat sink was smaller, used less copper, and resulted in a lighter weight device. Evans hypothesized that it was those internal changes that caused the device to run a few degrees hotter, and called it a "cost reduced" system.

Evans' new response highlights how he did not accuse Sony of creating a version of the platform that saw a performance loss in his original teardown. He notes you "could have some issues later down the line" with heat depending upon the personal setup of console owners, but there's also the possibility Sony "over-engineered" earlier models – meaning the company could have shipped a version that overcompensated for the system's thermal activity.

Ebay prices of the original model have since trended up following the teardown, something Evans says wasn't worth it. Ultimately, his message is the same and just as consistent as before regarding his findings: the system is running hotter, but that may not be a big deal.

Unfortunately, given the nature of the internet, fans of the platform have resorted to extreme measures of retaliation, going as far as to doxx Evans for his explanations. After a week of abusive comments and misinformation about his discovery, Evans decided to respond.

Sony has yet to comment on the changes, but the platform giant did see rumors earlier this year begin around the possibility of a new console before it surfaced first at Australian retailers. The changes come after continued manufacturing and supply chain issues, which Sony boss Jim Ryan hoped to remedy by the end of this year.
