Today's Cyberpunk 2077 livestream brought us plenty of new info regarding Patch 1.3 and upcoming DLC, but it also shed more light on the development arc of everyone's favorite character – Jackie Welles. Apparently, Welles wasn't originally meant to be all buddy-buddy with V. In fact, it turns out Jackie Welles was supposed to be kind of an "asshole."
After other members of the stream said they had "heard stories" about Jackie, they called on Patrick Mills, senior quest designer, to clear the air. Specifically, they wanted to know about Jackie's intended personality at the very beginning of Cyberpunk 2077's development.
"Oh, that he used to be a bad guy?" Mills responded. "Jackie used to be a real asshole in an older version of the game, in a way older version of the story. Before a lot of much-needed changes to the 'brologue', Jackie is actually the reason the heist goes tits-up, because he's a prick and he fights you and… he was a jerk."
Jackie Welles quickly became the star of the early hours of Cyberpunk 2077 and hearing that he was originally written as an "asshole" is in stark contrast to the friendship we see with V in the final product. Thousands of changes seem to have taken place during Cyberpunk 2077's development – but this is definitely one of the good ones.
Cyberpunk 2077's Patch 1.3 and upcoming DLC do not yet have a release date, but are expected to arrive "soon." CD Projekt Red teased some of the changes earlier this week, which include a reworked mini-map, changes to partner matching at Clouds, and a new way to reset Perks.
