Elden Ring VR Mode Rumors Started By PlayStation Store Listing

FromSoftware went quiet after revealing Elden Ring at E3 2019, but then it blew fans away with a big blowout at Summer Game Fest 2021, showing off what looks to be essentially an open world twist on the Dark Souls formula. There's quite a bit of hype behind Elden Ring, especially as the game gets closer to its release date. The Elden Ring release date is only five months away at this point, and in anticipation of that, the Steam and Japanese PlayStation Store pages for the game have gone live.

The Elden Ring Steam listing and PlayStation Store page are full of gorgeous new screenshots for fans to check out, but they've also been the source of some misinformation when it comes to the game. The PlayStation Store page for Elden Ring claimed that the game would be compatible with Sony's PlayStation VR headset as well as the PlayStation VR Aim Controller, which is a specialized controller that's shaped like a gun for VR shooter shooter games. This led fans to believe that an unannounced Elden Ring VR mode had leaked, but it seems those assumptions were premature.

The PlayStation Store page for Elden Ring has since been updated so that it no longer claims that the game will have any virtual reality capabilities. It seems as though this was simply an error on PlayStation's part, and so fans shouldn't hold their breath for a secret VR mode in Elden Ring.

While it appears as though Elden Ring will not have a VR mode, it's not like FromSoftware hasn't dabbled in the virtual reality space before. In 2018, FromSoftware released the PlayStation VR exclusive virtual reality game Deracine, which sees players take on the role of a fairy that interacts with children at a boarding school. Deracine reviews weren't exactly as high as fans have come to expect from FromSoftware titles, but it still shows that the developer is more than capable of making a virtual reality experience.

There are a few games that have optional VR modes, but it doesn't seem like Elden Ring is really the kind of game that would be a good fit for the technology anyway. For example, it's easy to see how a Resident Evil 7 VR mode would be beneficial, with the game being a first-person horror game, but Elden Ring is a third-person action-RPG that will likely be incredibly challenging and intended for long play sessions, putting it at odds with most VR experiences.

While it seems the potential Elden Ring VR mode was a false alarm, fans should be able to expect some fresh details on it sooner rather than later. The Elden Ring release date is not too far off, so expect the game to be shown off again between now and then.

Elden Ring launches January 21, 2022 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
