Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water Is Out For Consoles And Steam This October

Fans of the cult classic horror series Fatal Frame have likely felt neglected as there hasn’t been a new game since 2015. Unfortunately, as far as we know there doesn’t seem to be a new title in the works, but there is some good news for all of you who enjoy taking pictures of ghosts and being terrified.

At this year’s E3, we learned that the Wii U exclusive Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water would be receiving a remastered port for modern-day consoles and PC. Today, Koei Tecmo revealed the game’s official release date, and it looks like it’ll be out just in time to scare the pants off of us for Halloween.

The release date for Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water is currently set for October 28, 2021, and it will be coming to PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch, and PC. So you’ll be able to get those spooky shots as long as you own a console that has come out within the last generation.

Along with the release date, Koei Tecmo also put a trailer that sets the scene for those who didn’t play it on the Wii U (which is presumably most people.) The story revolves around the fictional Hikami Mountain that’s home to all manner of supernatural phenomena. Three individuals are drawn to the mountain and now have to find a way to survive the various ghouls they encounter. Luckily, they’re armed with the Camera Obscura, which is the perfect weapon against camera-shy ghosts.

It’s rather surprising that this title is getting a remaster since it wasn’t as well-received as other Fatal Frame games. It garnered average scores from most critics with many criticizing the mediocre story. However, it’s possible that Koei Tecmo wants to get more eyes on Maiden Of Black Water since it’s been stuck on the long-dead Wii U for years. Former Wii U exclusives such as Super Mario 3D World, The Wonderful 101, Mario Kart 8, and many others have all fled the failed Nintendo system to earn far more success on other consoles. It truly seems like there’s little to no reason to own a Wii U unless you really need to play Kirby And The Rainbow Curse.

We’ll just have to wait until October to see if this remaster of Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water fixes the issues that critics had with it and gives fans the phantasmic photography fix that they all want.
