Father Hayao Miyazaki Praises Son’s Goro Miyazaki’s Earwig and the Witch Film

When Goro Miyazaki announced that he would be making a new Studio Ghibli movie, many fans were concerned. However, support from father – animation royalty, Hayao Miyazaki – may quell some doubt.

Last December, Earwig and the Witch – Studio Ghibli’s first-ever computer generated anime – aired in Japan and is scheduled to be released in theatres in Japan by distribution company, Toho, on August 27, 2021. To promote the release, Toho interviewed Hayao Miyazaki. Many fans were eager to find out his opinion on his son’s directorial prowess. Miyazaki praised not only the film’s CG, but also his son’s work. The full interview can be watched on YouTube.

Miyazaki has definitely not always been an advocate for his son’s directing. When asked about his son’s first movie, Earthsea, it was reported that Hayao said, “It’s good that [Goro] made one movie. With that, he should stop.”

Like many other Ghibli classics, Earwig and the Witch explores themes of magic and innocence.

In other Studio Ghibli news, The Ghibli Museum in Japan recently avoided closure from a crowdfunding campaign, run by the city of Mitaka. Some Animal Crossing: New Horizons fans recently used codes to create Ghibli inspired outfits.
