In an unprecedented occurrence, Final Fantasy 14’s popularity surge has caused digital copies of the game to be sold out. You read that right, the digital version of the game is currently sold out on the Square Enix storefront.
As pointed out by SkillUpYT, “Final Fantasy XIV has had such an upsurge in popularity that the game is sold out on the Square Enix storefront so you cannot buy a digital copy and you cannot create new characters on NA servers.” They included a screenshot of a reddit post featuring the ‘sold out’ notification.

It’s unclear how exactly digital copies can sell out, but if we were to speculate, it could have been listed as ‘sold out’ temporarily until the devs figure out additional server space. The fact that you can’t create a new character also lends credence to the theory. Hopefully the issue will be sorted out soon and players will be able to purchase the game once more; Square Enix would surely be looking to capitalize on its massive popularity surge.

Final Fantasy games will always be popular regardless of the circumstances, however during a 14-hour live stream last Friday, director and producer Naoki Yoshida noted that the player base of Final Fantasy 14 is seeing a massive 160 percent spike for the Endwalker expansion, as compared to that of Shadowbringers.
There could be a number of reasons behind this surge. For instance, Endwalker brings to end the Zodiark-Hydaelyn arc, which began in 2013 with A Realm Reborn. Another reason could be the highly anticipated male-Viera character creation feature which was included in the recently released benchmark for Endwalker.
Whatever the reason may be, this massive surge in popularity seems to have taken Square Enix by surprise, as it would not have paused digital sales or new character creations for any other reason. There’s been no word from the company about this, but it’s unlikely that the issue will last for too long.
It seems that we’ll soon be getting an “Ultimate Final Fantasy XIV Cookbook”. The existence of the cookbook was leaked thanks to a listing on Simon & Schuster, a well-known American publishing company. It was removed pretty soon, but the internet had already got its hands on the screenshots.
