Final Fantasy Creator Says Fantasian Might Be His Last Game

Not too long ago, in April 2021, Fantasian was launched. The mobile game is a fantasy JRPG, and it was created by the same person who brought us Final Fantasy, Hironobu Sakaguchi. In an interview with The Washington post, Sakaguchi said that Fantasian would likely be the last game he makes and collaborates on with Nobuo Uematsu, the one who scored the Final Fantasy series’ best tracks.

“I feel both Uematsu and I went into this almost thinking to ourselves, ‘Hey, if this were to become our last project, we want to make sure we didn’t leave anything on the table.’ I’m certain Uematsu will compose music in a smaller capacity, but something on this scale, 60 tracks for a game is quite a huge task.”

Sakaguchi makes it clear that through the years, he has not been giving Uematsu detailed instructions when it came to the music. They collaborated a bit in the early stages, but then Uematsu has always been able to take plenty of creative liberties from there.

Fantasian being Sakaguchi’s last game would be fitting, considering he had a life-long goal of making a tribute to the film, Independence Day. Sakaguchi finally achieved that goal with the creation of Fantasian. He was enamored with the scene in Independence Day where the alien spaceship blows up the White House, so they made a way to mimic that in Fantasian by creating “small indentations in one of the game’s final areas to present the image of a magical explosion happening from within the structure.”

Though the team didn’t much like the idea of blowing up the dioramas, Sakaguchi was more than enthusiastic. In his words, “This is something that’s been a long time in the making for me, knowing it’s one of the last opportunities I can do this. It’s been a dream of mine.”

Though it’s sad to hear that this might be the end of the line for Sakaguchi, we’re stoked to see him accomplish his dream, and happy to know that he sees Fantasian as a great last stop.
