Nintendo announced Fire Emblem Engage during its latest Direct. The new strategy-based game will be released for Nintendo Switch on January 20, 2023. It doesn’t appear to be a direct sequel to Fire Emblem: Three Houses, though Nintendo is benefiting from its popularity by making sure the games share similarities.

One of the main similarities between Fire Emblem Engage and Fire Emblem: Three Houses seems to be a free-roam mode that allows players to visit NPCs and buy brand new gear. While it’s not clear from the trailer, the main feature in Fire Emblem Engage’s combat system seems to be the ability to equip gear that gives you the power of past characters from the franchise’s history, which should provide some fan service for those who like to see more iconic characters, like Marth.
News of a new Fire Emblem game first leaked earlier this year when blurry screenshots of the protagonists’ multi-colored hair leaked online. However, there was so little information that it left fans wondering what exactly the future of the series had in store. While today’s trailer didn’t offer a ton of additional information, it looks like Engage will be a successor to Three Houses and will be the newest main entry in the franchise.
Fire Emblem Engage will launch for the Nintendo Switch on 20th January 2023.
