Gamers are voting on Returnal's hardest biome, and have almost unanimously agreed that the Derelict Citadel is the hardest.
The thread was started over on ResetEra by ScOULaris, who wanted to see what other players had struggled with in their game comparative to their own playthrough. They said, "I've been making my way through Returnal recently, and I've seen elsewhere online that there isn't a clear consensus on which biome is the most difficult overall".

Returnal players took to the thread and agreed by a large margin that the game's third biome, Derelict Citadel is the hardest, with 50% of the 360 votes going to that section of the game. The biome that is considered the second most challenging is the fifth biome, Fractured Wastes, which received a decent 21.6% of player votes.
Players voted that the game's first biome, Overgrown Ruins, was the third most challenging with 10.9% of votes overall. The rest of the votes get a lot closer in votes, with 5.9% voting for the last biome, Abyssal Scar and 6.9% voting for the Crimson Wastes. The biome that was voted the least challenging of all is the game's fourth biome, Echoing Ruins.
Which biome you found the most difficult in Returnal is going to be completely subjective, but this thread makes it clear that the Derelict Citadel and Fractured Wastes are the two most difficult sections of the game. Players cited the third biome's drones and the gauntlet-esque challenge of the Fractured Wastes as being the main reasons for the difficulty.
Some arguments were also made towards the game's first biome, Overgrown Ruins, which isn't too surprising either considering how many players found themselves dying to the game's first boss, Phrike.
There are very few players on the thread voting for the game's last biome, which takes place almost entirely underwater and has enemies that die very quickly. A lot of players will have likely levelled Selene up by that point in the game and have a solid weapon, which is likely why it's scoring so low.
