Glu Mobile CEO And COO Stepping Down After EA Buys Company

EA announced it was purchasing mobile game maker Glu Mobile for $2.1 billion back in February. The makers of Design Home, Covet Fashion, Deer Hunter, Diner DASH Adventures, Disney Sorcerer’s Arena and MLB Tap Sports Baseball brought a product portfolio of over 15 live service titles generating a combined $1.32 billion in net bookings.

The final purchase was completed back in April for a final price of $2.4 billion. Share prices tend to go up a bit when a company gets bought out.

Now, four months after the ink has dried, Glu Mobile CEO Nick Earl and COO Eric Ludwig are out, according to a new report from VentureBeat. The former chief executives depart the company as EA reorganizes their many mobile purchases in preparation for a bigger push into the mobile market.

As VentureBeat notes, Glu Mobile’s executive departures aren’t all that surprising. The same thing happened following Codemasters’ acquisition, with CEO Frank Sagnier and CFO Rashid Varachia stepping down just last month.

“This is something that Nick and Eric have been talking to us about for the past few months as they’re pursuing the next phases in their careers and lives,” EA's mobile division head Jeff Karp said in an interview with VentureBeat. Karp was rehired by EA last summer after spending time at Big Fish Games, one of the few mobile companies not owned by Tencent, Zynga, Activision Blizzard, or EA.

“They’ve done an amazing job to help build the Glu business and culture. And it’s helped us a ton over the past few months with the transition. And this was really a decision that they made. We are excited about the company that they built.”

EA now has 20 mobile studios in its mobile division with a total of 1,500 employees. Karp said that EA sees massive growth opportunities in the mobile sector and is organizing its mobile studios for a larger push into the market.
