Hogwarts Legacy is Missing Some Iconic Locations, But For Good Reason

Hogwarts Legacy is easily one of the most highly-anticipated games in active development, with Harry Potter fans excited to finally get a proper triple-A console game based on their favorite franchise. The Hogwarts Legacy reveal trailer has become one of the most-viewed next-gen video game trailers to date, and so it's safe to say that fans are excited to learn more about what the game has to offer.

As it stands, there's not a whole lot known about Hogwarts Legacy in an official capacity beyond that it's an action-RPG set in the late 1800s, with players able to attend the titular Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry while visiting other iconic locations from the franchise. And while fans don't know much more about what they can expect from Hogwarts Legacy, they should rest easy knowing that the game will be accurate to the source material.

Promotional material exists of Hogwarts Legacy that showcases the Whomping Willow, a violent tree that shouldn't exist at the time the game takes place. Hogwarts Legacy writer DC Allen spoke to a fan on Twitter about it, saying that the team knows "better than to use that," and added that the Shrieking Shack won't be in the game either.

Hardcore Harry Potter fans likely know that the Whomping Willow wasn't planted on Hogwarts' grounds until 1971. The tree is used in Harry Potter lore to block a passage that allows one to travel secretly from Hogwarts to the Shrieking Shack, though only select individuals know how to calm the Whomping Willow down and gain entry. The Shrieking Shack was used as a sort of hideout for Remus Lupin, who needed to be somewhere secluded to deal with his werewolf transformations.

Details like this may go unnoticed by some, but it seems the Hogwarts Legacy writing team is on top of these potential continuity errors. The Harry Potter series is no stranger to continuity problems, of course, but it seems like fans don't really have to worry about that being a big problem in the upcoming Hogwarts Legacy.

In the meantime, fans are undoubtedly growing anxious for more news on Hogwarts Legacy. The Hogwarts Legacy release date delay to 2022 is really the last time that any substantial information on the game was revealed, with it being completely absent from E3 2021. Assuming Hogwarts Legacy's release date is still aiming for a 2022 release, hopefully fans can look forward to more details sooner rather than later.

Hogwarts Legacy is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
