How To Perform The Pledge Of Mara In The Elder Scrolls Online

There are many mechanics in The Elder Scrolls Online that allow you to role-play real-life elements, such as buying a house and getting married. Marriage in ESO isn't particularly fancy; there's no large ceremony or long-term commitment; however, it still has a lot of advantages that you can benefit from.

It's not too difficult to get married in ESO because all you need is the Pledge Of Mara item and a friend to marry your character. Here's how to get married in The Elder Scrolls Online and everything you need to know about the Pledge Of Mara.

Items And Effects Obtained From Marriage

In addition to getting a loving commitment from your friend, you'll also gain a unique piece of equipment after getting married. This item is called the Ring Of Mara, and it grants you a ten percent experience bonus while you and your in-game spouse are near each other and in a group together.

However, you both have to be wearing the Ring Of Mara to obtain this bonus, which is important to keep in mind if you have item sets that you don't want to unequip.

How To Purchase The Pledge Of Mara

The Pledge Of Mara is only available in the Crown Store, which is ESO's cosmetic and item shop. You can exchange real money in exchange for crowns on Xbox, Playstation, and PC.

If you purchase the standalone Pledge Of Mara item, then you'll have to pay 1,000 crowns, which translates to about $10. The other option for purchasing the Pledge Of Mara is to buy the Digital Imperial Edition Upgrade from the Crown Store for 2,100 crowns. With this upgrade, you'll also receive a unique horse mount, the mudcrab pet, and the ability to create an Imperial character.

Do Two Players Need To Have The Pledge Of Mara To Perform The Ritual?

After obtaining the Pledge Of Mara for yourself, you may be wondering if both you and your friend need to buy it individually to get married. Luckily, only one player needs to have the Pledge Of Mara, so your friend won't need to purchase it separately.

Is Marriage Character Specific?

The Ring Of Mara that you obtain after getting married to another player's character is bound to the two characters that get married, which means that the experience bonus doesn't transfer between characters. Choose wisely about which character you want to receive this experience bonus because there's no way to get the Pledge Of Mara item back after getting married without purchasing another one, so make sure that you've fully decided which character you want to marry.

Where To Find The Shrine Of Mara

There are numerous cities in ESO that each has their own Shrine Of Mara, and every set of faction zones have multiple shrines for you to visit, including many of the Chapter zones.

These cities include Daggerfall, Wayrest, Vulkhel Guard, Elden Root, Davon's Watch, Mournhold, Alinor, Rimmen, Leyawiin, and Solitude. These shines are called rededication shrines, and they're usually located inside of the chapel in each city. All of these Shrines Of Mara function in the same way, so there isn't any difference between zones or specific faction areas.

How To Perform The Ritual Of Mara

There are three steps to completing the Ritual Of Mara with your friend, and each of them is simple to complete so it doesn't take very much time. Here's every step that you need to complete to get married after you've obtained the Pledge Of Mara.

Travel To The Shrine Of Mara

As detailed above, there are many different locations throughout The Elder Scrolls Online that have a Shrine Of Mara. Both you and the friend that you're marrying need to be present at the same Shrine Of Mara to get married, and you both need to be standing next to each other and be in close proximity with the shrine.

Quickslot The Pledge Of Mara Item

To quickslot an item, you need to find the item in your inventory and select it. From there, you can place the item into your quickslot wheel, which can be activated while outside of your inventory.

Stand In Front Of Your Friend And Select The Pledge Of Mara

Stand near your friend, close enough that you can select their name tag. Then open your quickslot wheel and select the Pledge Of Mara. You can then select the character that you're trying to marry, and your friend will receive a pop-up that allows them to select yes or no. Once the second player selects yes, you will complete the ritual, and you'll both receive a Ring Of Mara.

Can You Marry non-player characters?

If you enjoy adventuring alone in The Elder Scrolls Online, then you may be curious if you can marry companions or other NPCs. Currently, there's no way to marry an NPC; this feature is exclusive between two player characters. However, this may change in the future, especially with the potential ways that the developers could enhance the companion system.

Can You Get Divorced In The Elder Scrolls Online?

Divorce between two characters is complicated in The Elder Scrolls Online because although divorce isn't technically possible, there are a few ways around it. Firstly, you can't divorce a player character that you've already married. However, this won't stop you from marrying a different player's character, so one character can be married to multiple other player characters simultaneously.

You can also destroy the Ring Of Mara, which will make it impossible to obtain the experience bonus with the original character that you married, but otherwise, it won't have any effect. You can't get the Ring Of Mara back after you destroy it, and you have to pay for another Pledge Of Mara item to get married to another character.
