Last Week August 24-30 In TV And Film: Spider-Man, Pokemon, And The Matrix

As the season winds down, attention is shifting away from the summer blockbuster and towards the holiday blockbusters – mankind must never be without blockbusters. You can see this shift in the most recent news in film and television, with eyes already looking ahead to the movies soon and shows to come.

Spider-Man: No Way Home Trailer Revealed

In our previous roundup, the big news was that the Spider-Man: No Way Home trailer leaked, and hot on its heels came the official trailer. It shows Tom Holland’s Spidey meeting up with some classic villains from Tobey Maguire’s tenure as the hero, as well as some old Garfield foes being hidden in the background. Doctor Strange is also there – although he might not be Doctor Strange – and Tom Holland has since commented that the trailer is “just the tip of the iceberg” for what’s to come in the full experience. The film appears to be based on the infamous One More Day comic, although with a fresh twist to avoid the pitfalls of the paper and ink version.

Pokemon TV Is Now On Switch

In a surprising recent update to the Switch, Pokemon TV has been added to the eShop as a free download. The app features episodes from the anime and several of the movies, so if you’ve been enjoying other recent free-to-play efforts like Pokemon Unite, Pokemon TV is worth checking out. Unlike Unite, you don’t need to worry about being paired with teammates with no idea of what they’re doing, either.

The Matrix 4 Finally Gets A Name

As with all the other Matrix sequels, The Matrix 4 has a subtitle beginning with the letter ‘R’ – The Matrix: Resurrections. That’s plural, so it implies more than one character will be coming back from the dead when the film hits cinemas in December. The original trilogy was written and directed by both Wachowski sisters, but only Lana will be returning for The Matrix 4. Since The Matrix, the Wachowskis have worked on V for Vendetta, Jupiter Ascending, and Sense8, although from the second season onwards, Sense8 was handled by Lana alone. Lilly has explained that after making The Matrix as a metaphor for transition, she felt that revisiting it post-transition would feel like “moving backwards.”

Free Guy Surpasses $100 Million At The Box Office

In more current movie news, the GTA-But-Not-Really movie Free Guy has enjoyed a steady box office return, clearing $100 million last week as it topped the chart for a second week in a row. The movie stars Ryan Reynolds as Guy, an NPC who doesn’t realise he’s an NPC in a video game, and Killing Eve lead Jodie Comer as Mille/Molotov Girl, a player who helps Guy realise he is, in fact, a video game character, and enlists his help to stop the servers from being shut down. Considering all we have in the way of GTA 6 news is a cryptic post from a voice actor and a message on a German quiz show, Free Guy might be cashing in on the appetite for GTA with the sequel feeling like years away. At least Saints Row is getting a reboot, right?
