Luke Is The Last Character Joining The Street Fighter 5 Roster

Capcom revealed Street Fighter 5's final DLC character, Luke, during their Street Fighter 5 Summer Update stream on Twitch earlier today. Luke is the final character in Capcom's season 5 of Street Fighter 5 downloadable content, and, barring any major changes of plans from the publisher, the last playable character who will be added into the game. He is currently scheduled to debut sometime in November.

After showcasing Guile and Cammy in Fortnite and upcoming DLC characters Oro and Akira — who will officially be joining the roster on August 16 — Capcom revealed the first glimpse of Luke, a MMA-style character with plenty of hard-hitting, offensive strikes. While we don't have much in the way of details regarding his actual gameplay, such as if he's command- or charge-based, his trailer gives fans a glimpse of what to expect. Capcom has also stated that Luke is "a key player in the future of Street Fighter," according to their official tweet.

While Capcom has stated that Luke is a brand-new character, fans immediately noticed similarities between Luke and a character from a long-lost, mostly forgotten Capcom title called Capcom Fighting All-Stars: Code Holder. This cancelled arcade fighter from 2003 featured a roster of characters from classic Capcom games alongside a handful of new characters, one of whom was a blonde-haired fighter named "Rook."

Rook's design also appears on the Street Fighter 5 website in a character profile under the name "Luke." Both "Luke" and "Rook" are written in phonetic Japanese characters the same way. Given the similarities between the various Luke and Rook designs, some fans have speculated that this new Luke might be the same character as Rook, but with a spruced-up appearance. Since we don't know any of his background or story details, however, it's impossible to say for sure that this is the same character set to debut in a cancelled game from many moons ago.

With Capcom stating that Luke is involved with Street Fighter's future, could they be hinting that he will be a protagonist in an upcoming Capcom fighting game? Fans haven't taken too kindly to characters besides Ryu, Ken, and Chun-Li being the main event in the past: Street Fighter III's Alex was planned to be the game's main protagonist, but he was eventually sidelined for old favorites. This could be another tease into what might be in store for a Street Fighter 6, which has been heavily rumored. We're sure to find out more about Luke — and Capcom's future plans — come this November.
