Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Sales Are Catching Up To Mario Kart Wii’s

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has been a monumental success story for Nintendo. Seven years ahead of release and it still tops the charts. Now, it's catching up to Mario Kart Wii.

The Wii's own Mario Kart game sold 37.38 million copies marking it as the second-best selling Wii game of all-time. Sports doubled that with 82.90 million, but that's beside the point – it was a titan in its own right.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has now crossed the 37 million copies sold threshold, putting it only 300,000 copies behind the Wii game. The anniversary of the series itself is also rearing its head, celebrating 29 years on August 27 – perhaps Deluxe will take the top spot by then.

In Nintendo's last quarter, New Pokemon Snap sold 2.07 million copies, Mario Golf: Super Rush 1.34 million, Miitopia 1.04. Yet, in that same time, the over a half a decade old Mario Kart 8 Deluxe sold a whopping 1.69 million copies, overtaking even Animal Crossing: New Horizons which sold 1.26 million.

There haven't been any major updates or new content added to reel players in. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is simply a staple of the Switch, something people are picking up when they get their new console. It has that lasting power that has managed to keep it in the charts all these years, a household family game that everyone seemingly wants to play.

It's unclear if any news will come for the 29th anniversary – perhaps Nintendo is holding off until its 30th – but fans are still waiting for a Mario Kart 9 announcement. They might be waiting a while.
