Marvel’s Midnight Suns Announced At Gamescom From Developers of XCOM

The rumored Marvel game from XCOM developer Firaxis was officially revealed at Gamescom's Opening Night Live presentation today. Marvel's Midnight Suns is a tactical strategy RPG that will dive into the darker side of the Marvel Universe as heroes like Ghost Rider, Blade, and Magik face off against Lilith, the Mother of Demons.

Midnight Suns is based on the 1992 Marvel Comics cross-over event Rise of the Midnight Sons that tells the story of Lilith, a powerful necromancer who was defeated and imprisoned by Atlantean sorcerers thousands of years ago. Fearing she would soon regain her power and awaken, Doctor Strange assembled a team of heroes from the dark side of Marvel to stop her once again. The Midnight Sons defeated Lilith and her offspring, the Lilin, and later teamed up again several times as the Marvel Universe's secret occult superteam.

The upcoming Midnight Suns uses the comic series as inspiration to tell a new story about Lilith and her child, the Hunter. The Hunter is the first customizable original hero in the Marvel Universe and will serve as the central playable character in the story. Midnight Suns will feature a mix of XCOM-style tactical RPG missions and dialogue-driven relationship-building gameplay between the Hunter and the various Marvel heroes featured in the game. Players will be able to develop a bond with each hero between missions in a hub world, called the Abbey, by chatting with them, participating in hobbies, and giving them gifts.

Rising Suns will feature 12 playable characters from the Avengers, X-Men, and the Runaways. Heroes featured in the cinematic trailer include Wolverine, Captain America, Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Blade, Ghost Rider, Magik, Doctor Strange, and Nico Minoru from the Runaways. The familiar Marvel heroes have all been given new looks to fit the game's darker aesthetic.

While the first cinematic trailer premiered during Opening Night Live, Firaxis will also be debuting a first look at gameplay on September 1. Viewers can tune in on the official Marvel Suns website at 11:30 AM on Wednesday, September 1 to see the game's new "deeply customizable tactical battle system." Marvel Suns is coming to PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam and Epic Game Store in March 2022.
