Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Stranger Things season 4 experienced some major filming delays and setbacks, so it's unclear exactly what the status of the fourth season is at this point. However, Natalia Dyer, the actress who plays Nancy Wheeler, has dropped some hints for us, despite being told by her producers to stay tight-lipped about it.
In a new interview with W Magazine, Dyer mentioned that Netflix has her under such strict supervision that she can't even hint at a release date. But when she was asked about what she could share, she couldn't help but give fans a little teaser on what to expect from the upcoming season. Echoing the statements of her co-star Maya Hawke, Dyer said that the cast started filming the fourth season in Atlanta in January 2020, only to be interrupted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Usually, the cast films for six to seven consecutive months, but due to the circumstances, they had to take a short pause before resuming production again later that year in September. Dyer said she's stayed in the same mental space the whole time, which has helped her keep in touch with her character despite the inconsistent production schedule for Stranger Things season 4. Currently, the show is in the last stretch with her part and she said it's been a very busy but fun experience.
As for the plot of season 4, Dyer could only say that Stranger Things season 4 is bigger and darker than the last. She said that the way they shot the scenes felt different in that they seem more stretched out this time around. With that in mind, we could expect a lot more suspense and special effects in the upcoming season that will build up to bigger plot twists and crazier jump scares. Dyer did confirm that the show will pick up where they left off in season 3, which means we will finally be able to find out what new threat lies ahead for the Hawkins kids (if they're even kids anymore), as well as what really happened to David Harbour's Jim Hopper.
It's been quite some time since Netflix viewers have had new Stranger Things episodes to watch. The third season, which was the most recent one for the hit television series, premiered over two years ago on the streaming service, leaving fans itching for months to see what happens next in the story.
Stranger Things season 4 is set for release on Netflix sometime in 2022.
