Nerf: Legends Looks To Channel Old-School Shooters With Its Futuristic FPS Approach

In a bit of surprising news this morning, GameMill Entertainment announced that it will be releasing Nerf: Legends this October on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch. Based on the classic line of foam guns from Hasbro, Legends is described as a "family-friendly FPS" that will feature both single-player and multiplayer modes that put players in the far future where Nerf guns are used for combat.

Featuring sci-fi trappings with a plot that has you facing off against evil robots, this concept may initially seem like some random bit of marketing that Hasbro cooked up to sell more toys. I can't deny that idea, but old-school FPS fans are likely excited as hell by this announcement. Back in the late 90s, Hasbro released Nerf Arena Blast on PC that utilized the Unreal engine to create a rather compelling multiplayer FPS. Legends looks cut from the same cloth.

As far as multiplayer goes, Nerf: Legends will feature 4v4 team battles and an eight-player free-for-all mode. Cross-play is supported, meaning everyone regardless of the platform will be able to get in on the action. You're not likely to run into trouble filling lobbies with the smaller player size, but it's nice that kids won't need a specific console to play with their friends.

I'm not sure the campaign will matter much, but I didn't think I'd ever see another Nerf FPS game. Considering how modern military shooters are tired as hell, I welcome this more laidback style of online shooter. If it can live up to the legacy of its predecessor, we may just have another hit on our hands.
