New Pokemon Snap Is Getting A Free Update

New Pokemon Snap is getting a major update next week adding three new levels to the base game, and it's completely free.

The Pokemon Company has been pulling out all the stops this year to celebrate the franchise turning 25. The launch of the long-awaited Diamond and Pearl remakes are coming later this year, Katy Perry sang a song about Pikachu, and earlier this month Pokemon Unite arrived on Nintendo Switch. However, the sleeper hit of the celebrations so far might well be New Pokemon Snap.

The spinoff game got a sequel fans of the original game have been waiting for since it launched on Nintendo 64 more than 20 years ago. No catching and training Pokemon, just traversing various areas and snapping cool photos of them. The only complaint about the sequel was its length. Its story was pretty short. If you felt that way about New Pokemon Snap, then we have some very good news for you.

The game is getting an expansion on August 3, 2021, and it's completely free. It's a pretty major expansion too, the details of which you can check out in the update's trailer below. Three new areas are being added to the Lental Region. Secret Side Path, Mightywide River, and Barren Badlands. The first of those areas is where your Neo-One will shrink down, as can be seen in the trailer where Wurmple appears much bigger than usual.

The update will also include 20 Pokemon that cannot be found in any of New Pokemon Snap's existing areas. Some of the 20 can be seen in the trailer, including Snorlax, Shroomish, and Psysuck. A pretty magnificent Gyrados can also be seen leaping majestically from a waterfall. The inclusion of Magikarp but not Gyarados in New Pokemon Snap was a bit of a headscratcher. The update clears that up.

New Pokemon Snap's pretty major update will be available to download from August 3, 2021, which means you have less than a week to wait until you can explore more of what the Lental Region has to offer. It is completely free, providing you own a copy of New Pokemon Snap, and you will be prompted to download it as long as you are connected to the internet, whenever you first start-up New Pokemon Snap from August 3.
